Hello guys,

I am looking to make a move from my 2008 535D LCI which I have had for over 4 years now, it's been a great car for me and pleasure to drive even today. It is remapped to 360 bhp and 750nm of torque, I have always maintained it in regards of engine and gearbox servicing and it's never missed a beat. Throughout my ownership I have probably spent over 3k on it in repair and maintenance but its been worth it as it still drives amazing for a 10+ year car.

However time has now come to get something a little fresher, I have test drove a number of different cars including Mercs and Audis however none really persuaded me to buy. I got into an X5 and straight away thought this is the one, their looks and performance seems the ideal combination but would like some more information from owners.

My questions are:

- Are they really thirsty? I get a lot of people telling me 4X4 really sip diesel/petrol what is the average MPG you'd expect to see from a 2016+ X5 40d? Comparing to my 535D which currently averages 30mpg with mixed motorway and local driving, looking at AutoTrader my 535d's average consumption should be 32 MPG which is pretty accurate, but for the X5 it says 41 which I doubt would be right even though its a newer engine? As long as it even matches my current consumption i'd be happy with that!

- What is the reliability of the N57 like? I have read many posts about the newer engine having timing chain issues? My current 535D has the M57 engine which is known for its reliability however it started making a chain noise from the engine and turns out the chain was going bad so had it replaced. Is the newer engine worst for this and a more common issue? Any other issues with this engine that I may need to look out for?

- What is the general maintenance cost for these? Is it a major difference in terms of repair cost being a big 4x4 or will this be similar priced? I use independent BMW dealers so this is probably a question I will be asking my mechanics when I get the chance but thought I'd put it in there for your advice.

- Is there a X15 facelift model? I know that they started production in 2014 up until 2018, I always tend to go for the facelifted models but cannot seem to see any difference between the 2014 and 2018? is there much difference between them? the older ones had newer engines and better MPG etc but is there anything as such with these models?

The model I am considering is the 2016+ X5 40D and will be cashing it out to keep for hopefully 3 years, do these cars hold their value well? Currently my budget is 30k for one, but looking at good specs that will help re-sale, the mileage will be under 60k looking to be doing about 10k a year.

Thanks smile

I’m looking at similar cars so am interested to hear responses. I’ve had a 2017 F25 X3 3.0 diesel and that averaged 35mpg with mixed driving so I think 30mpg is likely in a 40D X5, probably 25mpg around town

I’m torn between these, a similar vintage G11 7 series and a G30 5 series. The 5 series is the sensible choice but I keep coming back to the comfort and presence of the bigger cars

We’re out in the country so I’d like X drive and a 6 cylinder motor

The dog could jump in the back of the X5 and I like the high driving position, but the 7 series is pure luxury. Funding it very difficult to decide

I wont hijack your thread.. I have read lots of positive things about the X5

The tyres are massive and expensive, particularly if you stick with run flats. The ride is better without them.

They’re big cars. Parking camera a must for me

Heads up display is great and highly recommended
