Apparently there is a global ginger shortage and that would seem to explain why I've been to several supermarkets now and cannot get hold of any.

Is fresh ginger the new bog roll for 2020 or is it just in my area that there's none available?

I wouldn't recommend it for wiping your arse.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Have you been able to buy any fresh ginger though?

You can still buy cans and bottles of ginger on the west coast of Scotland, particularly in and around Glasgow but we're talking about the much sought after, and extremely rare, fresh ginger.

Didn't they used to stick a lump of raw ginger up a horse's arse to liven it up.a bit for racing?

I’m not sure why there is a shortage as it’s one of the easiest plants to grow, even here in the U.K.

Have you experienced the shortage or are you growing your own?

We can still get fresh ginger in the local supermarket and shops, but I have noticed the rise of a new variety which looks more like galangal - thinner and tricky to peel. Seems to taste OK though.

Cumin seeds however have vanished entirely.

If you do get some chop a piece off and plant it in a pot of compost in a warm window. It will grow some massively long green leaves/stems and the bulb under the soil will increase in size over time.
Dig it up when at an appropriate size (6months growth)
Let the skin dry out a bit and use to your hearts content.

I have a plant in my garden that was planted many years ago by myself. It’s no more difficult to grow than potatoes.

Get to your local Chinese or Indian supermarket/wholesaler. They will have ginger in bulk and it'll be cheaper than supermarkets.

Get to the 'world food' part of the freezer section at Asda.

Frozen ginger in portion-sized cubes. £1.80 for a 400gram bag.

Garlic also, plus garlic/ginger mix.

Was in my local Asda this morning and they had loads of it. Was tempted to speculate but I've still got 30,000 toilet rolls to offload ....
