Rebuilt engine.

Would a rebuilt engine in a second hand car put you off buying it? Especially a lowish mileage build.

This came up because I saw a Peugeot 208 on 60k that was advertised with a ‘rebuilt engine including timing chain’.

Would it make a difference if it had a receipt from a main dealer or even just a independent garage or would it simply be a no no?

Would you need to know why it as done and what was replaced?

Personally it would be nope. Perhaps influenced by the Corsa my daughter bought that the camshaft snapped on. A common fault but the engine was covered in instant gasket so had obviously been in bits before she bought it.

Unless it was something particularly rare I’d keep looking.

what proof is there of whats been done

sounds more like broken engine been repaired ...rebuilt would mean to me made as good new , so is it good as new with everything done or just the broken bits replaced

makes you wonder if neglect or abuse caused it to fail

If its been done properly with an invoice for the work, the engine runs fine, no untoward noises/leaks ect then I don't see an issue.
A proper rebuild would include new crank bearings (main and big end), pistons/rings, oil pump, cam chain/ belt, water pump, head refaced, new valves /springs /camshaft ect.
If this is the case then it's virtually as good as new and would be a bonus..)
