Anyone track a 4WD 996 or 997?
Discussion
Hi
I have a question for people who've tracked a 4WD 996/997. Either n/a or turbo.
When you're pushing hard on a wet track, eg trail braking or just carrying a lot of speed... what happens when rear end traction breaks away? Does the stability control sort everything out for you? Or is there a chance to manually catch the slide? Or... are you now merely a passenger on your way to the nearest armco?
Looking for real world experiences here, rather than internet lore.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 996T and take it on track occasionally. If you leave the PSM on, the car will likely sort the issue for you, especially so if you chicken out and go for the brakes. PSM will allow you to slide the rear under power, but very quickly steps in if it thinks you're overstepping the mark.
On all tracks except Goodwood, I turn the PSM off in the dry, as the resultant drive is much more engaging. Goodwood scares the Beejeezus out of me when doing 137 mph into No Name - a rather daunting corner due to no run off and a big earth bank to hit! That is in the dry as well as wet in terms of PSM, but have only run about 10 laps there in the wet.
I did Silverstone GP in the wet and cold back in 2013, the car was exceptionally well behaved under these circumstances.
So in short, get out there!!

996 and 997 very different both na and turbo models with variances between gen 1 and gen 2 997. Personally for track I would avoid as too heavy and expensive on consumables but to answer your question 997.1 and 997.2 turbo/C4S 9 out of 10 x power/torque will shoot up electronically via PTM towards front diff i think as much as 100% and pull you out from the most crazy angles. Occasionally you'll swap ends with PSM off if really taking the michael. A granny can drive mine.
The 996 c4s, 996 turbo and 997.1 C4S have the old viscous coupling system. More progressive systems but fragile as they older. I'll leave others to how well that system works.

Yeah, the brakes are pretty crap in standard form. I now run Pagid RSL29s all round on 350mm genuine Porsche 997T discs, with 10mm spacers on the callipers (along with 10mm longer bolts). A huge improvement, aided by Castrol SRF fluid and some mahoosive 997 GT3 Cup car brake ducts up front.
Really happy with the brakes now, but only see 4-5 track days out of a set of discs. Alcon 362 discs are the next step, but require 6 pot calipers, a step too far for my liking.
I forgot to say any earlier post that the 996T is mega happy with trail braking, in fact it's a must in my view.

Also have you thought about a LSD? Not many C4S out there equipped with LSDs.
