The previous owner of my Griff 4.0 had a new clutch fitted at a very well known and respected dealer (I have the receipt to prove it). 20k later and the clutch has quite dramatically gone bang. I'm not one to use the clutch as a foot rest so I was a little surprised, especially as there are cars around with 70k - 100k on the clock and still on the original clutch.
Took it to a well known independent and it turns out that when the clutch was changed before, they didnt refit the original metal collar, only the plastic one. The result of which is a mangled and jammed colar, a burnt out clutch and a warped/cracked plate.
It just confirms my opinion that it simply isnt worth paying extra for a stamp or receipt from a main dealer. You are not in any way guaranteed a better service. The only reasons I can see for people using them is if you have no choice geographically, or if you want to keep up residuals. However, from looking at asking prices it would seem that servicing by a reputable independent rather than main dealer doesnt really effect the residuals much either.

Echo you comment about Dealers but you can get exactly the same thing with the Indies. It is OK if you get the “Man” but very often you get the “Boy” I recently had a wheel alignment at a well known indie, the boy did it and butchered a new top ball joint, broke a new rack gaiter and more importantly left the ball joint bolts loose. I phoned to complain and was offered a replacement gaiter in the post which a week later has not arrived. Methinks my £2k for engine upgrade money is going elsewhere. I have to conclude that absolutely the only way is to do the work yourself.

I totally agree with that. I try to do as much as I can myself but unfortunatly I dont have access to a large garage, ramp or engine hoist, and what with having a young family I dont have the time to do some of the jobs myself. Shame really, becasue I love getting my hands greasy.
