High powered BMWs and High mileage ownership
Discussion
I’m hoping there is someone/multiple people that can help me here. My job involves a lot of travelling. Sometimes up to 200 miles a day on cruise control sat at 70/75mph on the motorway/dual carriageway, sometimes 40/50 miles a day but in the city centre barely going above 30mph, lots of stopping and starting. I visit sites throughout the day so the car is turned off and on again lots of times everyday(if that’s important). About a year and half ago I decided to use my companies car allowance scheme. I sold my old 08 Audi A5 3.0tdi(mapped to almost 300bhp) and got myself a black 420d coupe, msport plus pack, blue callipers, 19inch alloys, blacked out, black grill, green dust caps and a mini private plate, looks the biz. Love the thing, I don’t have the performance kit on it but if I did I reckon it’s one of the best looking cars on the road. Anyway the problem is of course the power. If you have driven a 300bhp diesel you know how intoxicating the torque is, the 420d just doesn’t pull hard enough. I have had it mapped up to about 238bhp and it’s very nippy but still leaves me wanting more. I won’t be doing anything else to the car as reliability is the thing that’s most important to me. To my question, with the amount of miles I do(about 25k a year) and my heavy foot, would a 435d be a reliable daily driver? Would a mapped 435d be a reliable daily driver for me? Has anyone got any experience with high powered cars and high mileage daily driving? Also, while we are here would it be silly to get a 440i in my position? If I could go back in time I would get a 430d and have it mapped to stage one and I think I’d be happy, but if the 435d is just as reliable then that’s my next car. Unless of course the new 440d is down to 30k by then. I want something fast and reliable that can handle being a work horse, so if anyone can share their experience in a similar situation to me then I’m hoping it will help me make my mind up, thanks!

Must be a long time member trolling, surely?I commute in my remapped F33 440i. A mix of A And B roads on my 32 mile commute nets me 42MPG~ (OBC, I’m aware this will likely be a touch optimistic). Driving it in a more... spirited manner will see me in the high 20s. It’s perfectly possible to get over 40MPG on a run, but you will have to be careful.

Despite having 19 inch wheels and a blacked out grille on your black BMW, it still isn't powerful enough to cruise at 70/75 ?
Hmm I'd go for the M sport plus pack next time, just to be sure.
I was just describing the car and type of driving I do. The problem isn’t cruising at 70, the problem is getting to 70 quicker than guy next to me, on the odd occasion someone wants a race.Hmm I'd go for the M sport plus pack next time, just to be sure.

Yes. Had mine for a little over a year and around 25k miles.
435d on a stage 1 map. Fast, smooth, comfortable, sure footed and when cruising along, still very economical.

Awesome car, shame it doesn’t have green dust caps. Most of the guys I work with have ‘sensible cars’, Skoda, Volvos,VWs ect. I’m just worried that I’ll go buy a 435d and I’ll be in the garage every other week because I’m driving it like a taxi. I suppose I’m being stupid really, after all they are made for driving and there are plenty for sale with high mileage. How often do you accelerate hard on a daily basis?435d on a stage 1 map. my 2013 535D (appreciate its a bit older/different than what you're going to be looking at but the engine and gearbox are fundamentally the same) has just ticked over onto 180k. Had a bit of preventative maintenance and a few bits and bobs replaced at 160k ish but other than that it hasn't really spent a great deal of time in the garage.
I have a 640d Gran coupe covering over 15k a year on predominantly motorway and A/B roads.
Car doesn’t require a remap as it’s very nippy standard, and an overall mile muncher. Fairly comfortable even though it’s sitting on 20s but that is only if you trade in RFs for a set of PS4S.
Just make sure you ensure any 3.0d BMW you buy has had its egr recall. I’m sure most of them have been recalled for EGR pump issues. If you’re super unlucky, the valve might cause issues a while after.
So might want to have a covering warranty just to keep yourself safe

I’ve owned BMW diesels for years .. the last 320d we had we put 130k faultless miles on it in four years
Work wise we used the 30d engine in 3,5, and X5 models .. these would be worked within an inch of their lives. The cars would so 150k + before disposal and the X5’s over 250k miles
Yes .. they can take big mileages and hard work. All the above were serviced on the button and the work cars had their oil changed every 10k miles

This is good news. I have only ever had a couple of cars for personal use, barely 5k miles a year as I always used a work van. I have always thought that 100k miles was ‘the end’ of a car. This 420d I have is the first time I have ever had a personal car that I drive daily so when I picked it I was trying to be sensible, thinking a 2ltr diesel would be a smart choice. When I think of a 435d I think performance car and less reliability but I suppose at the end of the day it’s made for driving and plenty of people use them as work horses. People daily m4s and rs3s so I guess I’m stupid worrying about it reallyWork wise we used the 30d engine in 3,5, and X5 models .. these would be worked within an inch of their lives.
