My host for Christmas day is rather fond of gin, and has a reasonable collection already (ie Gordons won't do), so I'm looking for recommendations up to £50 a bottle. Can you assist please?

Brockmans is great. Was recommended to us by bar staff in a Gin bar a few years ago.

Monkey 47 is very high on my list of winter gins. Lovely stuff.

If you want to go (a fair bit) cheaper, Opihr is quite acceptable too.

Others that I'm partial to tend to be sharper and/or more citrusy, I put them more in the summer gin category.

I enjoyed Stranger and Sons Gin from Goa when I tried it recently, something a bit different.

My favourite is The Botanist, made on Islay in the Bruichladdich whisky distillery. They've been making it for around 10 years, so not just jumping on the latest bandwagon. Smooth and tasty enough to drink neat.

monkey 47 is the be all and end all of gins.

You will not go wrong with it.

Batch apple and honey is my new favourite. Picked up a bottle off a hipster stall in King's Cross back in the Summer and it's been a firm favourite since, getting through a couple of bottles. Lovely!

If you can find it then Archipelago Botanical Gin is one they likely do not have in their collection.

I picked a bottle up last year for an avid collector in Germany and took it with me on a work trip since he couldn't get it over there.

I would recommend Isle of Harris Gin or Sea Glass Gin from Orkney.
