This sounds like something more man-made than an illness. India is hardly a stranger to chemical leaks, after all.

So far, water samples from affected areas have not shown any signs of contamination, although the sick are thought to have collected their water from the same source.
All of the affected people collecting water from the same source does rather point to that being the cause - despite it apparently not being contaminated.

That said, if the past year has taught me one thing, it's not to underestimate reports of a new mystery illness.....

Though if this does turn out to be the next contagious nasty, given global travel is a fraction of what it was at the time CV19 made its debut, one would think it would have a rather harder time spreading.

My first thought, too. Certainly makes you think of something chemical.

It sounds like an ‘unauthorised / uncontrolled release to atmosphere’ of something nasty, probably from a pipeline, in my opinion.

How about this?

China and India have been extremely aggressive on a disputed border

The disputed Galwan Valley is about 1200 miles from Eluru.

DDT etc, from anti-mosquito spraying.

I can guarantee every year 2-3 of my colleagues in India end up in hospital with Dengue.

Those without the appropriate background should not be spending their time on Promed, scaring the bejeezus out of themselves; they don't understand.

More than 6600 cases of Brucellosis (aka Malta Fever) out of 56,000 tested in the city of Lanzhou. Discuss.

Is SADS-CoV (Swine acute diarrhea syndrome) the next emerging infectious disease threat?

Sorry bud it’s healing sky news so flagging up you shouldn’t be talking about it unless you know the background is a bit strong.

The biggest problem with the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak was that it originated in wild animals, which found their way to markets where it spread to humans. If a bug emerges in a ‘domesticated food herd’ it’s easier to spot and eradicate by euthanasia of the entire herd, before it spreads to humans. That can’t be done with wild animals, that are used for food. China has taken steps to try and mitigate the issues by banning the hunting and sale of wild animals for food. The whole ‘eating wild animals’ was born of necessity anyway. China has a huge population, and no particularly effective mass agriculture to feed it, if you add in Communist era sanctions and tariffs from outside territories, you sow the seeds ( so to speak ) we have just reaped the whirlwind.
