I fancy doing some riding in the Sun, Spain, Italy etc but for a weekend rather than a long trip is Fly and ride a thing ?

I don't want a package / guided trip, I presume some of you must have done similar so any suggestions are welcome - regarding locations / bike hirers

A quick google finds most just want to hire scooters but I found a 700 Tracer was £100/day in Alicante which seems a bit steep compared to car rental

If you can put up with Henry Cole, then a recent episode of ITV4s Motorcycle Show included a bike hire set-up in southern Spain.

Austria/Italy border. A BMW Motorrad hire centre. The owner is an affable chap and can provide suggested routes should you wish.

I'd probably just google local vehicle rental places roughly in the area you want to be, you'll pay a premium over a car (economy of scale etc), but nowhere near as much as these organised tour/ hotel type packages.

Good friend of mine rents GS1250s on this basis, you can have a guided tour, or a prepared but unaccompanied tour, or just get the bike and do your own thing. Google Toro Adventure, or I can put you in touch.

He also does enduro tours but that's all very much on the back burner due to the correct circs.

ETA: 30 mins from Malaga airport.

seems reasonable price-wise too

It would be good to get a few recommendations together, both destinations and rentals.

So Tenerife is on the list, and small enough you could do the whole island in 2-3 days riding I'm sure. Anywhere else tickle the fancy? Almareia is supposed to have some good roads, as does everything through the Pyrennees apparently.

I do fancy the Transfagarasan and Transalpina in Romania, I saw a PHer had flown in, hired a car and done it in as a weekend trip - sounds even better on a bike but TBH anywhere with some bends and sun will do

Bike hire is stupid money. A Tracer 700 is the biking equivalent of an Astra frankly. £100 a day is a lot.

I wanted to do it, but I think it makes more sense just taking my own bike on a ferry looking at the daft prices. Or maybe just getting a moped which can be had for a lot more sensible prices. I had a surprising amount of fun on a 125 moped in Santorini.

A friend of mine and 3 mates hired a container, and sent their bikes and kit in the container to said destination, and followed by jet a few days later. Worked out cheaper than hiring apparently. Just a thought.

I agree, I was looking at the prices and I can hire a £10k car for £35/day yet a £10k bike is £100/day - just supply and demand I suppose.

I know people who have done that for long trips - ie months

I must admit that a large part of the enjoyment is the noise and the fun factor that I get on my KTM 950 that I just don't think I'll get on a BMW GS which seem the default hire option

I recently rode a VStrom 1000 and it managed to remove 99% of the fun of riding
