Good morning,

my local Fire service has announced they are recruiting in 2021 for what seems like the first time in 400 years and i am very interested in applying

Just seeing if there are any fireman/woman on the board who have any experience with the application process along with any hints or tips.

I expect there to be hundreds of applications for only a handful of positions so any advice would be greatly appreciated

A colleague used to be a firefighter and described how he got through selection against many others who he thought were more suitable based upon their appearance and previous roles (lots of ex military and other uniformed services).

He described how many approached it with brawn, when actually they were looking for brains too, which he had in abundance.

Good luck!

I did the application for West Yorkshire a few years ago. There will be online verbal and numerical tests and if you do well enough you then get to the physical tests which are easy enough if you are reasonably fit. Had to do 8.6 on the bleep test then a series of other tests including a final relay session in full kit. There is also a claustrophobia test which is timed and your performance on this is ranked whereas the other tests are pass or fail.

There was a real mix of people involved including one guy who came down from Scotland but then failed the bleep test first thing in the morning! There is also a basic data entry test on a computer which I think was just a general ability test, nothing complicated. You do a problem solving task in a group too to see how you Interact with others. Also a ladder climb and some role play scenarios to do with stumbling accross a car crash and also doing fire safety advice with someone in a care home.

The final interview was what I think I didn't perform well on (and probably why I didn't get in) as in hindsight I think I tried to give too complicated an answer whereas I think they were literally asking questions to see if you had read the behaviour code/standards and wanted you to repeat that to them.

Really interesting experience and am would say just give it your best as each stage and see how you go. It's very competitive but also very do-able if you are reasonably fit and have half a brain. I did feel that the atmosphere was quite old school in terms of rank etc.

It's a bit vague now but feel free to ask any more questions, I assume the tests are all quite similar across regions and there are videos on YouTube of the physical etc

In the job coming up to fifteen years now, if I can help at all let me know.

Not 100% on the latest entry tests but I’m sure I can find out roughly what you have to do.

I'm a retained firefighter have been for 4 years, which is probably easier to get into than the full time, my advise is if your not sucsefull then try retained then try to get competent and get a transfer to full time, few lads I work with have done this a one still does both! Even on the retained there's opertunity to cover full time shifts while is a good foot in the door
