I have a 2011 X5 that I've had for years, now on 165,000 miles.
Recently, it has started doing a sort of jerk/crack when accelerating in any way other than very gently. It started as a single crack/jerk, but now there are more each time. I have been scratching my head for a while, and sending it to BMW yielded no answers.
It feels like something in the drive system is slipping - maybe a worn spline in a rear drive shaft? Would an issue in the transfer box present these symptoms?
Engine/gearbox all working perfectly, it's definitely nothing to do with the engine.

As an aside, there's IS definitely some issue with the transfer box, as the front wheels "judder" when turning at low speed - but it's been doing that for years. This jerk/crack lark is new, and feels/sounds like its further back than the centre of the car. Although hard to be sure... but 100% not coming from the front.

I'm getting a bit worried that whatever it is, should it fail, will result in loss of drive and potentially a dangerous situation me/with the children in it. My husband doesn't seem concerned....hang on a minute! wink

Thank you....

Riggie

Has he taken out additional life insurance on you recently? :-) In all seriousness, that does sound to me like the transfer box, I understand you can have it refurbed, or get a used one. Take it to a good indy, avoid BMW dealers.

I think that age of e70 suffered from differential problems. A quick Google brings up plenty of posts.
There's a place local to me which rebuilds alot of them.

Have you changed your tyres recently?

Sounds like the symptoms associated with fitting non star rates tyres. I had this for 150 miles, most obviously when accelerating on smooth tarmac, car would shudder and jerk. I took the Michelin's off (even though Costco recommended them) and went for * rated Goodyear tyres and it was back to its usual smooth self.

Staggered or square tyre set up?

Are the tyres BMW approved Star marked items?

No it's not this (that happened once before but was a different kind of jerky!)
