718 Boxster GTS (not 4.0) - what a fab car!!
Discussion
Test driven a 718 Boxster GTS the other day.
Honestly, don’t understand all those reviewers moaning about 4cyl engine.
It’s brilliant!! Like an old school sports car, angry and loud and super fast.
Reminded me of all reviewers praising Yaris GR - I drove that too, couldn’t see half of the street because of bad seat positioning, didn’t like it.
Strange world.

Test drive a 4.0 if possible, then decide which one you like best and proceed with purchase.Honestly, don’t understand all those reviewers moaning about 4cyl engine.

Completely agree. If the 6cyl versions never existed, there wouldn't be a bad word said about the 4cyl cars. They sound pretty good - I might even prefer the sound to something like an M2. Cracking power delivery & addictive turbo punch that lets you play with the chassis more than the 4.0 cars (on the road at least). 40mpg possible on a motorway cruise.
The rest of the car is class-leading, as most people accept.
Also agree on the Yaris, I was left with a pretty lukewarm impression.

I agree the 4 cylinders seem to be highly underrated in certain quarters and in the year I've had my 2.0 Boxster I've grown to like it more and more based on its wider abilities. But as others have said each to their own.
I would add though that the 4.0 GTS I saw and heard going around the track at the PEC earlier this year sounded bloody awful compared to our 2.7 981 Cayman which sounds absolutely glorious at full chat with PSE switched on. Down to the introduction of PPF no doubt but it takes away some of the emotional connection and the consequent desire to buy one over those I already have.

When I drove the 718 S at the PEC at Silverstone I got a headache after 40 mins as at full chat for that amount of time it is not a pleasant sound. In real world driving you don’t drive like that and it is quiet at a relaxing motorway speed (apart from the tyre noise), angry sounding when pushing on and purposeful when you start it up in sport mode.
The only time it sounds agricultural is on normal startup when it has been sat unused for a few days
Suffice to say that a bought 718 Cayman S with all the bells and whistles 2 years ago and have been a happy boy ever since
I would only ever change it for a 718 spyder and that is on looks not sound

Love my flat 4 GTS . Test drove a 981 GT4 and I get the engine sounds is better at full chat but the GTS is better driver as power is more usable on public roads.I understand the new 4.0 GTS is not the same sound as 981 I’m waiting for a test drive to make my own mind up which might change my thoughts. I would definitely change for spyder for a long term keeper if I could spec one. But not disappointed I’ve got a flat 4 apart for start-up sound. I bought a 718 Cayman GTS F4 when they were new a couple of years ago. I thought the car was fantastic and the engine very good at moving the car forwards but an absolutely awful and horrible lump in every other way. I persevered for 4,000 miles then decided I didn't need to put up with such a dreadful engine any more, so asked the supplying dealer to buy it back but they didn't even want to make an offer, so i phoned another OPC who did make an offer and sent a technician round with a buyer to check the car over. I started the car up and I s
t you not the Porsche Terchnician said to the Porsche Dealership Buyer 'that's not right, there s something badly wrong with that, you should pass on this one'..... I laughed and said there in lies the problem, it's not broken, they all sound like that.

Each to their own. I found it a bloody awful engine compared to the sixes. Powerful it may be, sophisticated it is not.
But life would be boring if we all liked the same things
Me too,But life would be boring if we all liked the same things

I also found the steering a bit light for my tastes but that may be due to me being used to my 991,
certainly fast though and lovely chassis,
have to say, I much prefer the 981 version but if I didn't have that to compare it to or my 991 I'd be very happy to have one sat on my driveway.

So what you're saying is the technician they sent out couldn't tell the difference between a broken engine and one that was running normally? Which OPC was it so I can avoid using them in the future?

PPF has an amazing effect, heard an M4 start up in a car park the other day, mine use to roar on this & then have a loud idle on standard exhaust, this new one was quiet like a Micra - hope it sounded better with WOT.I would add though that the 4.0 GTS I saw and heard going around the track at the PEC earlier this year sounded bloody awful compared to our 2.7 981 Cayman which sounds absolutely glorious at full chat with PSE switched on.
