I have just bought a car that I've hankered after for a long time. I learnt to drive in my mother's 205 GL and have had a bit of a thing for these little French cars ever since. I always wanted a GTI but back in the 90s it never happened. Fast forward 25 years and I have been looking for a fun car to keep in the garage for sunny days. I stumbled across an advert for this and couldn't resist.

It's a 1991 1.9 sold new in Japan. It's RHD and manual. It was imported last year and has had a light restoration since including a respray in it's original colour. A Japanese car appealed as it is completely rust free, low mileage (65,000 miles) and in lovely condition. It also has working factory fitted air-con which will be nice in the summer.

Here are some dealer photos. It is being delivered on Monday.

That is lovely.

I have very fond memories of these as a kid; my uncles best friend had a two, both green a 1.6 followed by a 1.9 and I remember going to Silverstone with them for some form of Peugeot owner's day and the touring car team being there.

Looks really nice - I sold my steel grey 1.9 GTI a couple of years ago and still miss it. The Japanese 1.9 GTI was mainly 1.6 running gear with a lower output 105bhp engine. Looks like it's had the half leather seats added and been converted from auto to manual.

I remember being taken out for a blast by an amateur rally driver who was missing his lower left arm in a 1.9. His ability to pull a handbrake turn whilst making very rapid progress was seriously impressive regardless of his disability.

Out of interest, which did you prefer. We had a 1.6 and a 1.9 on the fleet at work and I always thought the 1.6 was the better car. I always took that if it was free.

Regardless, very nice buy OP.

Fantastic. I was torn between a 1.9GTi or an MR2 when I first started looking at second cars in my early twenties. Tidy examples of each were £1500.

Wish I’d bought both now! Loved the MR2s though.

Top work, very cool. My mate had a similar one a few years ago that I had a go in - I hadn't driven one before so hadn't appreciated how well they drive & in particular steer.

Enjoy.

Fantastic.

My uncle used to have one and I loved it as a kid - always wanted one but could never afford the insurance and ended up in a 106XSi instead. It's been so long since I've seen a 205GTi on the road you forget they still exist!

Looks immaculate OP, you must be very happy - quite a find through what seems to be an unusual channel for frenchies!

The MR2 is still do-able. I had the 205 and the MR2 on my long shortlist of stuff when I wanted something about 4 years ago. Ended up with a lovely Mk1 MR2 for a song really. Most of the other stuff has gone mad price wise.

Great looking car op, had a few exciting passenger rides in these, never owned or even driven one sadly.

I was about ten, so I liked them both! Both felt bloody fast to me in the back or passenger seat.

Excellent taste. I had a 205GTI 1.6 followed by a 309GTI and then a mk1 MR2 T-bar. All great cars but the MR2 was probably my favourite.

That 1.9 GTI looks beautiful.

Had a 309GTI back in the early 2000’s and it was a sweet, sweet engine (if you overlook the head gasket and starter motor issues that plagued my ownership).

Used to enjoy spirited drives with my mate who had a ZX Volcane at the same time.

Lot of love for the 205s. Enjoy your new toy OP

Awesome looking car, I had a 309gti though, my mate had the 205.

Jap imports don’t have any underbody protection, not sure if you’re aware of that, but something to think about if you’re going to use it more than summer days...

Enjoy...

Is that the case with non Jap Jap imports though?

The op's 205 looks lovely and I admit to pangs of jealousy. In the meantime, I'll console myself with this!

Hmm... good point.

Hadn’t thought about it that way... yeah it’s a not a Jap, Jap import...I’ve only shipped over domestic Jap cars.

Well my help is useless! I’ll shut up and hopefully just enjoy picture updates... lol

Stunning car OP. I had a silver 1.9 with an sunroof in the 90s. Loved it to bits. Felt like a rocket ship at the time.
