I’ve always loved the look of the DB9 and have decided now is the time to get one.

Would you kind folks mind giving me your thoughts on this one:

https://preowned.astonmartin.com/preowned-cars/180...

Is it missing any crucial options?

The centre caps on the wheels all looked damaged so would want those replaced.

I believe the upcoming (04/21) 7 year service is an expensive one so would it be reasonable to ask for that to be taken care of pre-purchase?

What else should I be asking?

Many thanks.

Hi, I have a DB9 same year model.

Some cars have the added B&O sound system which is nice but the premium audio is plenty enough.

Price is not too bad but I would say £60k is where it should be, maybe a tad more.

If the spec is what you want then why not?

I notice one of the alloys has some damage on the rim in the picture, front drivers side.

The centre caps are a non issue. Mine were the same when I bought my car 4 years ago. You can buy replacements for not a lot on ebay that are identical to the originals.

If you take it for a test, drive it with sport mode and try the paddles too. Makes a big difference to the experience, the non sport mode auto is ok but not very sporty.

Edit - these are great cars, and the last version the 9.2 (MY13 onwards) is actually rarer than the vanquish of the same era.

From having a quick look the only thing that struck me was the Cream Truffle top to the dash. In strong sunlight (not common at this time of year) you can get horrendous reflections of the pale leather in the screen that affects visibility badly for some people - this has been discussed in an earlier thread. Possibly not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of. If you test drive it try to do it on a sunny day.

Edited to add
it also looks to have carbon ceramic brakes, so I'd check that they are in good condition and covered by any warranty as they are expensive to replace. There's various threads on here on CC brakes that, if I'm right, might be work perusing; if memory serves me right there was apotential issue over bolt corrosion and they are particularly sensitive to some of the acidic wheel cleaners

Current MOT shows an advisory that N/S/F tyre has a cut but not too deep, how many owners as the previous MOT's have been at different MOT stations.

Car has seen limited use over some years but at least it has been used which is good for a V12.

At this mileage the carbon ceramics should be OK but look for any score marks etc on the discs.

The 12 month Timeless warranty should ensure that the car has had a full checklist before sale but other threads have indicated that this is not always performed as it should be. Any rectification will be down to the new buyer spotting any defect that will then be rectified by the dealer using the warranty as it costs them nothing.

If you can get an independent inspection just for peace of mind would be worth it.

Thanks for the comments all.

The point about the light coloured dash isn’t something I had thought of. Most of the miles will be done in Europe in the summer months so need to think about this. I’ve often had light coloured interiors buy now,I think about it, the top of the dash has always been a darker shade or colour.

Re the different MOT stations - another good point. I spoke to the dealer today and apparently he knows the owner who has had it since new and said he always had it serviced at Leeds. Apparently the owner is a well to do chap in his 70s but was probably a 20 something footballer.

I’m getting some photos and a video sent to me next week. I’ll ask for some of the brakes but not sure what I’m looking for especially re the bolts issue.

If everything looks in order I’m minded to make an offer of £60k delivered, to include the next service, new tyres (if not done) and the wheels sorted.

Would I be mad to buy a car like this without physically viewing or driving? I’ve heard good things about JCT600.

Consumer credit act allows you a full refund of the vehicle purchase within 30 days (providing you do not put lots of miles on car) and up to six months but the dealer will reduce the price paid for the car.

Always best to see the car as a sales person will just want to sell the car especially before year end (I was in sales and you can see what my PH nickname is).

Cost me £300 for an independent inspection and car required 4 new dampers and timing chain cover gasket replacement, all apparently missed as part of the Timeless inspection. However all was put right within 4 weeks by the AM dealer still have the car and will be keeping it for a few more years yet so I do not want to put you off but it is always buyer beware.

The cynic in me thinks the MD missed the faults on purpose, knowing the warranty would cover any post-sale issues

I also noticed the damage on that wheel - which begs why they took the picture of just one wheel - is that the best one ?!

I echo the comment about make sure you are happy with a light coloured dash top, and double check the bonnet - it looks in the pictures like it either has dust on it or a few stone chips - maybe the picture ??

Essentially, ref the service - you will get what you negotiate - also make sure it has floor mats included, and make sure the crystal key is there and not damaged. What about immobiliser/tracker - is there one - will your insurance make you have one - are the fobs with it or is it a mobile phone one?

hth.

I bought a similar car 18 months ago, so my experience may help. Mine is a September 2014 DB9 which had 17400 miles when I bought it in June 2019. The price was £67490 from a main dealer, with a 1 year Timeless warranty. So, 18 months on for a similar car, albeit with a lower mileage, I would agree with other posters that a price nearer to £60k would be about right.
My car interior is a high line split Sandstorm and Obsidian Black and I have found the windscreen reflection to be a slight issue on sunny days. The saving grace is the black binnacle cover which reduces the eyeline glare, but elsewhere the light colour does reflect in the windscreen. Your proposed model also has a black binnacle, but the much lighter colour leather and the absence of the black high line will make internal glare more pronounced.
As for the year 7 service, I don't believe that should be a particular issue, but you should check that the brake fluid was replaced in year 6, the coolant was replaced in year 5 and it would be a bonus if the air and pollen filters had also been replaced. When my air filters came out at 18747 miles, it was clear that the dealer-recommended interval of 20000 miles is too optimistic - mine were pretty clogged. I would expect to replace the differential oil at 20000 miles and not at the recommended 40000 miles. Many owners have found that it really doesn't last that long. I also recommend a thorough, wheels off underside examination. My car front brake pipes were showing signs of corrosion because the steel pipes are in direct line of the brake cooling air flow. I also found the front splitter "chin stiffeners" to be badly corroded, so a through check of those brackets by looking through the lower grille with a torch is recommended.
Also beware of the low mileage. Many owners will say that these cars are meant to be driven, because long periods in a garage can lead to issues with things like to gearbox and diff. My diff does 'grind' a bit during tight, slow speed manoeuvres if the car has been standing for a month or more, but the problem goes away when it has been driven regularly.
Personal, physical inspection is essential, imho.
Hope that all helps

Here’s the video of the underside:

Not sure there’s much to conclude from that but my similar age and miles 911 looks a lot tidier/cleaner underneath.

Looking at the video might have had new rear dampers as the AM labels look very new.

You can always ask for the vehicles service history which will detail all items including any bodywork that may have been sorted.

Dealer may throw data protection as a reason not to show, but you can ask.

Just one thing struck me - what looked like wet patches on the rear undersheet. The car and tyres were dry so what was wet? Was something leaking, like transaxle oil? One of the patches was by one corner, where you'd expect liquids on the top of the undersheet to run to. May be nothing but I'd want to know.

I was wondering that. The underbody panels are easily removed to identify where the fluid is coming from. I thought the video was poor, good ol Max.

Loving the help in this forum - thank you!

At what timing in the video is the damp patch visible?

I’ve asked for further details on service and a couple of other bits but not getting exactly what I ask for. I really do think that unless a potential customer picks up,on something, they do nothing to these cars to prep them for sale.

Here are the wheels & brakes if you would like to offer any opinions. Looks like at least a couple of the tyres are from 2013 I think. The one with small chunk a out of it is still on the car. Apparently AM Timeless only have a tread depth requirement and no age limit.

the dirt on the sill behind one of the wheels suggests you are right - sloppy attitude tbh if that is a main dealer selling for top £

In my experience buying from a main dealer should make you take more care and attention than an indy.
I mean why ffs if they gave a toss wouldnt they replace the wheel centre caps? probably 40 quid cost.
