It looks like the rolling 40 year loophole enabling cars to display b&w plates will be closed with effect from January 1st.

I wondered how long it would take for them to get round to this. Over 5 years since the 40 year rolling VED exemption was introduced!

They'd always been allowed on pre-1973 cars but when the VED exemption at 25 years old was stopped from rolling forward every year by Gordon Brown in 1998, it was just a coincidence that historic class and black and silver plates were linked together.

I see plenty of modern (i.e. less than 40 year old) cars displaying black and silver plates illegally anyway. frown

I never understood why people do this, they look absolutely ridiculous on anything too new.

It could be worse. Here, as a money maker for the State, you can pay a little extra and have a specialty plate issued.

I also think black and silver plated look rubbish so I'm pleased this ends here.

The hard-line DVLA document looks pretty two-faced given the lack of enforcement over mis-spaced plates.

I would agree on 'many' cars and my latest car would not suit a B&W number plate at all however, I think it looked OK on the Morgan?

That seems unfair when the medic who attended to your toe can get one.

I wish they’d loosen up on approptiate font width though. Older cars with the narrow font look just as bad as cars with inappropriate black/silver plates. I’ve had to put narrow font plates on the Quattro and it looks naff.

I remember in the early 70's changing black and white number plates for the modern white and yellow ones, with my Dad. Anything past about 1972 looks silly with them. But the reality is that no one buying a new car after 1969 would have had black and white plates.

That's a shame as i was looking forward to eventually seeing them on a Sierra which would have got a few on here agitated. laugh

I doubt it, no one gives a Sierra a second glance.

I do paperbag

I don't like them, but they're so incredibly rare now.

I wonder whether they'll stop the rule that says that people with matt or grey new cars don't have to have front plates.

And this Bill seeks to make Registration Offences endorsable - So instead of the Ferrari driver just forking out £100 each time they are stopped for no front plate, they can have 3 points to go with the ticket
