Some Facebook messages not showing

Suddenly, some Facebook messages are not showing.
(I use a Mac and Chrome Browser, never use phone).
For as long as I can remember, if I click on the new message symbol, it opens a window to the right of the screen with all my historic conversations in, going back a long time.
Now all of a sudden, only a small selection of these appear and I cannot find or access the old ones.
The only common denominator I can find is that all the missing messages are related to conversations with sellers on FB market place.
If I go to an advert where I know I've had a conversation with a seller, it says "message again". If I do so, it brings up the previous historic conversation, so it still exists, but no longer shown on my list of conversations for me to easily access or refer back to.
If someone sends me a message, I get the little red alert on the new message icon, but when I click it, where once it would show all these historic conversations with the latest new message at the top, it no longer shows the new message. So I know I've got a new message from someone, but can't access to see who it is or what the message is, unless I randomly go back to all the various market place ads I've visited to find the one where the new message is. If I do this, it opens in the full screen messenger, but not the side window.
It's most strange and I can't find anything on line of how to fix it, as I still have all my non-market place conversations showing,
I have disabled adblock and cleared all my cache and cookies to no avail.
Everything is switched 'on' in settings and notifications and it's the same situation if I view in Safari

"I messaged you last week but you never got back to me..." yeah, because I had no idea other than a red dot new message notification, but no message to view.

Yeah, same problem.
I’ve worked out that if you close the message, it’ll disappear... You need to minimise the message instead.
I hate the new interface, not because it’s different, it’s just hideously slow. Even to the point where I have to wait ages for my typing to appear in a text box. It’s almost unusable... which is no bad thing as it means I spend less time on it.

Yet if I close messages from non-market place conversations they stay live and available in the chat box list.
Also, what do I do when a notification pops up with the red dot in new message icon, but I can't see who it's from - because they don't show up in the window? I know someone has sent me a message but can;t locate it unless I open every for sale ad I;ve looked at hoping to find the one who replied. That can't be right?
