Hi, looking a MacBook for a bit of cloud based bookkeeping, excel and general web browsing. Is it worth paying the extra for the Pro or just pumping for the Air. Also, does anybody know what the education discount is on these as that might be an option for me to purchase via?

Thanks

I have the latest Air and it’s more than enough for what I need. The webcam is poor which is a bit disappointing atm especially as web conferencing is so popular. My previous Air had a much better webcam but other than that this one is superior. Mrs has a pro looks and feels better but haven’t noticed any performance difference.

I bought a new MacBook Air a few weeks ago. The education discount was £100 off so it cost £898.

New MacBook Air and Pro are pretty much identical, for your usage you won't see any advantage going for the Pro.

I'm a heavy video editor and I've just ordered the MacBook Air.

I damaged my previous MBA which was only a couple of years old and had to buy another. The on-paper specs were much lower for the current Air but I was assured in the shop (John Lewis) that the increased performance of the lower-spec processors was now much better and I wouldn't notice any difference.

Complete bks. This machine, a Core i5 with 8GB RAM and SSD, which is about 2 months old, is like some old Windows donkey compared to my previous MBA. It frequently takes ages to wake up (my old one was instanced every time), it hangs on Safari pages for seemingly-endless amounts of time, it just runs like a dog. I'm hardly a heavy user, I use Office, Outlook, Safari, Chrome and not much else other than occasionally listening to music or viewing PDFs. I'm certainly not editing video or anything like that. Unless you are doing nothing more than a bit of web-based stuff, you need the Pro now I'm afraid.

The MacBook Air now comes with the new M1 chip which is apparently a big improvement over the older model (which I think you have).

Get the M1 chip Air. It’s a phenomenal achievement for the first iteration and effective has made Intel redundant. It runs cool like an iPad, has long battery life and is faster than many of Intels high end chips.

It Intel released something similar for the PC the amount of circle jerking going on would break the internet.

Sounds like there is something wrong with it, take it back.

Get the pro if you;

1) like the touchbar (may don't),
2) want a couple of extra hours battery life
3) want a slightly brighter screen
4) like the form factor better.

otherwise get the Air which is slimmer but very similar performance.

Whatever you do make sure you get the M1 chip. It is an absolute powerhouse and stays cool with over 2x the battery life.

Upgraded a fortnight ago and it is a dream. Glad i waited.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that. This is my third Mac, so I'm used to how they work & perform. The other two were perfect but this one is really quite frustrating.

Webcam is equally poor on the pro and the new ones apparently aren't any better which I think is a pretty big oversight!

Although the resolution isn't improved the image sensor is, so not more pixels, but better definition - especially in lower light.

Try uninstalling Chrome to see if it improves things. The issue is not specific to M1 Macs - Is Chrome Killing Your MacBook?.

Thanks, that's interesting. I've just had a poke around and I do indeed have traces of Keystone dotted about, so I've just followed the removal instructions - will give it a few days and report back.

Sounds like the Air is the way to go then - had heard good things about the M1 chip and seems to be reaffirmed based on some of the above yes

Chrome killed my new Air, both safari and chrome would hang for ages. Deleted chrome and it’s been fine since
