Hi All,

After a bit of advice if i may, My contract with BT is due to come to an end this month (31st Dec). I am currently on BT fibre, with those mech disk things. We are paying just over £40 a month. Normally i would never have paid this for internet, but what with the kids always moaning about the signal upstairs, and the internet being a bit flakey with my previous provider (virgin cable), i thought i'd try BT.

The discs have improved things a little, but not as much as i would have liked, and my renewal has come through at just short of £50 a month!

I'm not paying that. So i had a quick look on uswitch, and i can get M100 Fibre Broadband and phone line (which we probably wont use but still!) for around £25 a month. That seems pretty good to me. As i say, i had virgin previously, and wifi wise in the house, it wasn't great but i think that was due to the crappy virgin hub they sent out.

So i was thinking of going for something like that, and then buying my own router and mesh system (assuming that these BT ones can't be used with another router, which i'm assuming they can't?!).

Any advice to help me get a better deal, and a decent wifi reception in the house would be appreciated. We live in a modest 3 bed semi, so signal around the house shouldn't be too hard to achieve, its not a mansion!

Connected to our wifi, we have

2 laptops
2 PCs
Xbox
PS4
3 mobile phones
kindle
TV with netflix and other streaming etc

Thank you for any advice!

You could negotiate with BT - tell them you have been offered much cheaper broadband elsewhere, and you'd like to stay with BT as it is easier and better for both you and them if you stay, but you have a family and their renewal offer is to expensive. It has worked with Vodafone the last two ties.

I have the BT whole home wifi connected to my vodafone router - the full sized white discs - They cover our five bedroom house really well and we rarely have any issues with them. there are six of us and the wife and internet gets battered. I assume they are similar technology to the black ones you have. The difference is you turn off the router wifi, and the first disc has to be connected to your router with an ethernet cable.

ah so by the sounds of it, the discs can be used with another router that isn't BT branded. Thats good!

I'll phone them tomorrow and see what they can do but i doubt they will beat virgins offer! Question is, do i stick with their router if i go with them, or get my own!

BT are little more then shysters, their service is over priced, similar reliability/up time as competitors and really screw you at renewal.

Gi with whoever is cheapest, shell broadband, Vodafone etc then get your own router or mesh network. Batter coverage & cheaper price.

Zen. Not the cheapest but decent router included and no issues if you want to use your own (looking at you Sky...). No price rise when the minimum contract period is up either. Static IP address and decent customer service to boot.

The easiest answer to this is PlusNet. They're linked to BT, but separate.. They use almost identical hardware, if not identical and are quite good.

Just use Quidco or similar on top.

Or Zen, which is what I'm with (but have been with BT in the past and PlusNet). I'd happily go back to PlusNet if needed.

Zen do internet only and do it well. No upselling.

i’ve just gone through the exact same thing the last week and ended up staying with BT.

I originally went with BT because i wanted BT sport and it was an ok deal....... 2yrs later I’m no longer watching by sport and internet/ phone has crept up to £47 a month and my ‘deal’ was due to expire in January.

I’m not a massive internet user, just 2 of us in the house, usual streaming etc..... was going to switch to talk talk as they offered a reasonable price. After they contacted BT to switch over the line, BT contact me to offer me phone/ internet at current speeds for £20 a month for 2 years. perfect, i’ll stay with BT at that price.

But i was pretty annoyed they wanted to charge £50 a month but could suddenly drop to £20! ok i know that’s the game, but still!

oh and on the disc/ whole home broadband thingy....... I was dropping down to the lower deal which didn’t include the extra disc. the price to stay on that was £37 a month, but if I just kept the disc they’d charge me a one off fee of £30 and I could keep it. was a no brainer to pay for the disc but have the cheaper internet price

As a Virgin Media customer...don't go with Virgin if you want decent wifi out of the box. The Virgin hubs are useless for wifi.

Either put the Virgin hub into modem mode and supply your own, decent wifi router, or use powerline/mesh wifi adapters.

Most of the residential providers are monumentally st as the use the openreach network.

Having said that, the providers also purchase a level of service.

If you pick a good independent, it will cost more but should problems arise, they are on it, 24/7.

Have a look at iDnet.

Elderly neighbour had trouble with his email and in sorting it out I had access to his BT account. Exact same package as we have for £40, he was paying mid £60's. I looked at his offers - all around £70. With my login, same offers were around £40.

Thanks all. If i go with Virgin, i'll certainly get my own router but i guess its play the game and see how cheap we can go! (why can't they just give us a decent price to begin with rather than have to do all this compare the meerkats uswitch thing!)

I don’t think you can use the black BT mesh Wifi access points with another provider’s router as they talk directly to the BT hub, the white ones work differently.

Yep just cancelled BT and I have to send the discs back, so i'll have to look into getting a half decent router and mesh setup.

My bro has bought the Amazon Eero stuff with his Virgin Media setup and is happy with it - he sent back the Google mesh system after a firmware update screwed it.

Buy your mesh system from Amazon and their customer service may come in handy if you want to return it.

This, and their customer service is appalling.

They blame WiFi problems on you for having "too many" devices (20) connected, or you need to pay someone to set them up properly! Then they tell you that WiFi isn't supported so as long as it works at the modem it's not their problem.

All my problems arrived with their Superhub3, and were solved when we added our own Netgear router. We changed to Sky for half the cost, and they do support WiFi.

I have recently installed TP-Link Deco P9s. They use both Wifi and Powerline technology to create a mesh. You can add more units if 3 are insufficient.

Plugged straight into a Virgin router now I now get excellent WiFi throughout the house.

TBH wifi isnt something your provider controls, its your house and walls, my house is mainly concrete and this effects the wifi.

Have look at getting a mesh setup

Ive personally been looking at upgrading to mesh smart bulbs so every (most) room has its own wifi connection

I'm firstly debating who to go with. Reading online and speaking to my I.T department all offer different views.

Ive either got Virgin Fibre available to me (108mbs) for £24 a month or plusnet (66mbs) for £26.99 a month.

What would people here go with?

Thank you

iirc from thinkbroadband

PlusNet, iDNet and Zen are the best rated.

It's not just about straight connection speed - some ISPs throttle/traffic shape/manage/etc.. and then there's potentially contention ratio and support being decent when things go wrong or need explaining.

e.g. https://www.thinkbroadband.com/isps/compare?isp_7=...

Almost identical story over here, except, after two phone calls from me saying I was happy to stay with BT provided they could get closer to the price I could get elsewhere they weren’t playing ball. I said to them on the first call, look I’m going to shop around, find me your best price and I’ll ring you back when I’ve found mine.
Called back, no movement so cancelled.
Ordered through Plusnet. Magically got a phone call saying, oh, you’re thinking of leaving, let us offer you £x per month, which was a figure I’d have been happy to pay, which I told them, but because you made me fart around, I’m going to stick with Plusnet for now anyway and when it comes round again, I might come back on whatever new joiners deal you’ve got and take whatever freebies you offer at that time.
Cheekily, after a couple of months they sent a prepaid envelope so I could send my YouView box back to them for recycling! Why would anyone do that when it still does a job, even if it loses the BT branding and features?
