I have a standard 993 (C2 RHD). It has just failed its MOT because the headlight levelling was inoperative on the drivers side headlight. When the the switch in the cabin is operated you can see and hear the motor operating on the passenger side light but nothing on the drivers side. I managed to get hold of a spare light unit (assuming the motor had gone) but still no luck. I can find and references to dedicated fuses or relays but understand that the motorised levelling function is only standard on RHD cars.......any advice very gratefully received. Light operate normally in all other regards.

Without going outside and looking, from memory the connector/clip on the headlights is a poor design... the harness clip hangs in a plastic 'thing' and the connector relies on this plastic 'thing' supplying enough resistance to connect properly to the clip.

Anyway - try not having the clip in the plastic 'thing' - instead, have the harness loose and keeping the headlight loose on the wing (on a fluffy towel obviously), stick your hand in behind it and connect the two properly.... then test the motor.

You may need several assistants, and a small child is always useful to put their hand inside the dangerous machinery.

Have you tested this, or are you just assuming that the voices on the Internet are correct?

Tested and works fine when the connectors are pressed firmly together.

Now can you advise on how to untangle my 10yr olds hand from the light unit locking mechanism?

Many thanks.

No problem.

Leave him there, but remove his shoes and any sharp objects nearby so that no damage is done to the car.

I can feel the unreasonable backlash on this advice forming in the ether, so you could try waving a chocolate bar at him from a safe distance?

There you go again using small children for your own benefit. Seriously I thought the days of using children for labour were over.

But I guess, as long as they have a use to keep your 911 going .... Well you just don’t have a care biggrin

Daan saaf they still send children up chimneys, and make them work in the small gaps on the oil-cooled cars - the North is so much more civilised these days.
