Home insurance renewal time, normally straight forward but this year they want valuations, proof of maintenance and the most annoying one.A home safe rated at 10 x value of items.

So I'm needing ideas please of said safe because I haven't the foggiest idea of where to begin looking?

Items are;

Date just £3250

Omega speedmaster £3500

Bi metal sub £8500

I've emitted these items for now so getting a bit twitchy to say least.

You need a safe with an insurance rating of £2,000 (EN14450-S1).

Google a few and see what's available, both for size and price.

Sounds excessive. Try a different insurer?

We fitted one in the bottom of a wardrobe a couple of years ago - screwed it into both wall and floor, it's not going anywhere.

It does offer peace of mind for holding spare keys, jewellery, cash, important documents etc,

It's not especially big - similar size to those you see in hotel rooms.

Wasn't an insurance requirement for us - we installed it purely through choice.

What fixings do you use? I think a decent crowbar would get most normal wall fixings out no bother? I'm thinking of one myself.

That was my thought. Those numbers aren't huge are they?

Anchor bolts x 4 for the wall fixings - M10, I think. Long screws for the wooden floor.

If some blaggers managed to break in, if they got past the dogs, if they found the safe behind the wife's shoe boxes, if they had a crow bar with them and if they managed to break the safe out (no mean feat), they'd have deserved it !

By my reckoning you would need a safe with a valuables rating of £150k ish... that is not that big a deal you need a Eurograde 2 or better you should get one for £1k ish. They are handy to have at this rating most will be fire rated so great for keeping docs in along with valuables.

Be warned mine weighed nearly 230kg and was an absolute arse to install (4 Romanian window fitters and a fat bloke... me nearly died) seriously consider paying for installation.

They only get really big and costly when you need serious cash rating.

You want a good West Bromwich made safe from the 1940s weighs just short of 1/2 ton

Is it worth shopping around for another provider? I’m with Aviva and they’ve not requested any extra security for mine.

I was with Aviva and now AA and they didn't request a safe (on slightly higher watch value), nor pictures, proof of purchase, nothing!

Another idea is to have another safe in a prominent position with a bit of cash, cheap jewellery and a cheapest watch and if you ever get burgled they may just take that one

Haha we have similar at work. When we had a refit they couldnt move it know matter what they tried and weve managed to move big cash machines easily. So now the shops in a random shape up one end fitted around the safe in the back.

Yes it’s not shiftable. I inherited it and it took 4 guys and lifting tackle to get upstairs when we moved in

That is what my parents did they had 2 safes one well hidden the other in location that would be found. Both were like the safe in photo you would be well organised to move it or open it

Plus you would need to get past a 11 stone GREAT DANE and he was pure muscle and was not fond of strangers

Thanks all some good advice as always.I've opted to look elsewhere for the watches and wifes jewellery and keep the house insurance separate.
Like the 2 safe option that's genius😁👍

Surprisingly similar to mine. In fact, I had to go and check, despite being sure that it wasnt the same manufacturer.

Mine is a J & J Taunton.

Similar lower internal locking compartments, too.

After nearly three decades with me it is starting to look a little second hand. Two years in a garage didn’t help. I have been meaning to refurb it.

OP: sack off your current insurers. The 'proof of maintenance' part swings it for me. The worth of the watches is not dependent on their being serviced in line with contact centre employee's opinion.

Looks great. I refurbished mine many years ago, but the last couple of days I repainted it externally and cleaned the brass work, it now looks top notch. It’s a West Bromwich made safe which is the UK home of safes and only 15 miles from my house. It came out of a factory one mile from the factory where it was made.
