Was the mother mentally ill? She didn't seem the full ticket.

I saw that too..awful to read, and highlights again the danger of house fires and young kids.

Whether the parent's complete indifference to the well being of their kids is a form of mental illness...?

Hard to say, as it would need a judgement on my part about what is normal. She certainly seemed able to argue off social workers and schools, but as the article said: they have finite resources that were focused on other priorities (substance misuse)

I suspect if the government paid a disability benefit for this form of illness, we might find a lot of people suddenly applying.

As one commenter said: " how is it you need a license for dogs, but not children?"

I'm not sure they're strictly correct about a dog license, but I agree with the sentiment.

I'm also surprised no charge for manslaughter?

3 kids being killed on the roads would see an outpouring against the driver responsible, but in this case how aren't the parents responsible?
