You can on their web site navigate to a bit where it appears you are closing the account but at the end it says you have to call them to finish the task, they also send an email saying to call them. You call, listen to lots of recorded messages, and 30mins of music, then if you are lucky a person on a poor phone connection answers.

They say they can't help but the home move dpt will call back.. but they don't. Spent the best part of two weeks trying to do this.

Have been giving Southern electric and then SSE money for 40 years, after this experience It will now be my life ambition to never under any circumstances give them any more.

When I moved suppliers, the new company tells the old company and you don't really need to do anything else other than provide meter readings. Are you moving and not taking a supply elsewhere?

What are you trying to do?

As above, if you move suppliers you dont need to do anything beyond sign up with someone else and pay your final bill.

Also, all domestic SSE customers are now OVO customers since they bought the retail business about 12 months ago, so it maybe that your account isn't even with SSE any more.

Initial idea was to move existing arrangement to new place but that seemed to stall because it always ended in “That is all done you just need to call us now to finalise it” but the appropriate department doesn't answer and doesn't call back if you leave a message.

Existing supplier at new place is not interested in where we were before.

All I can think of doing is to simply stop paying them, and be difficult to contact when they want the final bill paying. It has been close to two weeks several times a day trying to make contact. I have intimate knowledge of their press button x menus, hold music, and messages saying how important my call is to them.

They are still separate brands and probably will be for the next couple of years. Ovo have got the rights to the name for another 3 years.

Seems odd. I've just moved from Sottish aholes to Shell Energy. I just went to U-Switch, chose the deal I liked and clicked the button. Shell asked me for meter readings and took over yesterday. Took about 3 weeks. All the changing over is done behind the scenes.

Try cancelling your DD, that will probably wake them up.

Is this domestic or business?

You can't just move your existing contract/arrangement to a new company - they all have different tariffs.

If it is domestic then just go online, find a new supplier and tariff, and then sign up for that. The energy companies will do everything in the background and SSE/Ovo will send you a final bill. Simples.

If it is business then you need to talk to your account manager or broker. Preferably a broker as they will sort all the paperwork out.

I'd suggest that Scottish Power make SSE look like rocket scientists...

Mond you Shell have just asked me for meter readings two days after I sent them. Maybe they're all idiots?

They all try and make it as difficult as possible for you to move - some people just give up. It is part of the retention strategy.

They really don't! Literally contact a new supplier, sign up with them and everything else will happen in the background. You'll get a final bill from your old supplier and thats all.

That may be the case if simply changing suppliers but in my experience is definitely not the case if moving location and supplier. SSE seem to have deliberately made it impossible to communicate with them.

When I first started buying electricity from Southern Electric they had a shop in the high street where you could talk to an actual person.

Ok, so break it down. You are moving house? You want to close your account with your existing supplier and start a new account with a different supplier?

Just provide the final meter reading here....

https://sse.co.uk/forms/closing-meter-reading/name

And then start a completely new account with someone else at your new house.

You dont need to "close your account" with SSE, you just need to tell them you are moving out and provide them with a final meter reading. They'll close your account down automatically when the balance is cleared and you are no longer a customer. If you don't pay the final balance then the account stays open as a bad debt in case you ever sign with them again.

EDIT - If you've not already told them you are moving you can do that on here too; scroll down the page to the "moving day" bit and click on the "moving your gas and electricity" page.

Follow the link you suggest and at the end it says something along the lines “nearly completed, to finalise the details you must now call them” but you are not able to call them because when they do answer, typically after 30 mins, they are not able to help, the home moving department will call back, but they don't. Sending an email to customer services gets no reply. Filling in a complaint form gets no reply. Calling the home moving department directly gets no reply.

PM sent - can help if it is in the business area, but as Condi said, OVO do the domestic side and can use the SSE name for x years.
