Co op coffee beans

My wife has bought a bag. Made an expresso this morning. Tasted of grit / extremely bitter. Not had them before. Decided it was the beans and not my grinder/press.
The appearance of the beans is very black and shiny. Compared to a nicer bean (eg booths) which are much lighter coloured, is a black bean representative of a burnt bean?
