population density in sub-saharan africa is actually really low. with even vaguely efficient agriculture they'd have no problems at all feeding themselves with or without a population growth.

Well, according to the first website I found there are just over 900,000,000 people living in Africa. 50,000 dies per day equate to 18,250,000 per year, givng a death rate of 20,277 deaths per million people per year.

The UK deah rate is about 6000 deaths per million per year so Africa's death rate is about 3 times ours, which sounds plausable giving the prevalence of Aids, Maleria, lack of health care, etc.

To give you a bit of comparison, these figures are taken from the CIA world factbook, it seems Russia's death rate is 14,520, Ghana is 10,840, Malaysia (who achieved independence from us in the same year as Ghana whilst having a similar average wage, so we can comapre these two quite nicely) is 5,060 and Brazil is 6,150.

Obviously something needs to be done about Africa, but after discussing these 50,000 deaths per day, with the wife last night, i thought I'd see if there was any non-biased population information out on the inter-web. This site offers some pretty scary reading. www.overpopulation.org/Africa.html
Anyone care to Hazard a guess at what would happen if the western world somehow managed to wipe out these 50,000 deaths per day?

I'm not sure where these death rate stats are coming from. They don't look right.

If you assume that in the UK the average age of when you die is 80, then you can take a straight calculation and arrive at 60,000,000/80=750,000 deaths per year, or 2,000 per day.

Quicky multiply up 60m vs 900m and you get UK deaths at 30k per day vs the figure quoted of African deaths at 50k per day. Still a huge amount.

So I'm not sure where this deaths per million comes from unless it takes other factors into account. At the end of the day you cant cheat death, so at least 1/80 of us limeys will drop dead each year.

If 6000 deaths per million is true it would mean that we would live for an average of 166 years in this country.

So, the original statistic is missing a vital bit of information.

its an assumption. i think the gals last up to 80 whereas us fellas only to 73ish. The lower the average the more deaths in theory.

FWIW, according to the ONS' Social Trends 2005, 603,000 died in UK in 2003 on a population of 59.6M.

In the same year, life expectation at birth was 76.2 for men and 80.6 for women in UK.
