I received my subscription copy of Car today and skipped straight to the Letters page. Sure enough, a letter I sent in had been printed. Basically, I outlined my fear that future Maseratis will be little more than rebranded Alfa Romeos. My plan was for Maserati to continue producing cars to rival Aston Martin, rather than going downmarket and diluting the brand.

I always like to think that some influential people might read it and realise that these things matter to us car nuts. At least I feel I've been able to put my point across.

However, there were another couple of letters on the subject and the writers stated they would rather see the marque die than have it diluted.

This is an interesting point. Personally, I'd rather see the marque live on. If the Alfa based cars are a success, then maybe in a few years we'll see some "bespoke" Maseratis again. If the company were to close down, there's a chance it might never be born again.

Here's a point though. Alfa Romeo want to be seen as a true sporting rival to BMW. The new premium platform (offering 4x4) is a step in the right direction, but I can't help thinking a proper RWD platform with a longditudinal engine would be even better. Hmmm, Maserati already have such underpinnings

Babies and bath water spring to mind.

Roll on the Frankfurt show in September. I just hope against hope that the new Maserati coupe will be launched there afterall, and the motoring press were given a bum-steer about it being canned.

Maybe I'm just a romantic fool when it comes to marques I love :(

Maserati is a going concern. If there is an alignment with Alfa then fine. They will share some switches, but i doubt that anyone would kill off Maserati.

It had to separate from ferrari. For maserati to shine it needs to be competition to Ferrari. Ferrari has done it a favour and revived the brand. It now has momentum. I for one will be waiting for september. If the new one looks like the demo pictures then i may be buying one.

Long live italian aston

Hmmm big worry is that there just isn't anything from MASerati for a while. the 90th Anniversary spyder is just a spyder (beautiful) with the Gransport body kit.

Cool though that is - I really don't see how we're going to see a 'new' maserati for a while. (someone explain to me im !)

With the 06 coupe binned and the Alfa tie up still arguing about platforms and engines it seems that we might have to wait 3-4 years before we see a new model potentially?

Think that would be a shame - but having said that if Maserati do take on the GM / Alfa V6 and turbo it and drop it into small light dynamic chassis with good handling (a la upmarket lotus exige type car) then I'd put down a deposit immediately!

In the meantime I've really enjoyed being a MASerati owner - the 3200 has really fired my passion for this marque and it's been a dream realised to own and run it.

Driving back from Cornwall yesterday the car was in it's element on wide sweeping dual carriageway, demolishing all commers whist maintaining maximum comfort.

It's refreshing to see the goodwill for the car - got lots of waves from passers by, had kids hangling out the window at roundabouts staring and people at petrol stations asking me to rev it up!

There aren't many other marques that can still attract that kind of attention with a car thats an old model 7 years after release!

I for one truly hope that maserati kees up the good work it's begun, and one day I'll be back for another

Some good news. www.italiaspeed.co.uk (2nd item down in the news section) seem to think the new Maserati Spyder will be at the Frankfurt show afterall

The new Spyder was due to be a folding hardtop, although my preferance would be for a "proper" coupe.

Roll on September when we'll know for sure!
