Board games for grown ups

I don't know if there is a topic for this but couldn't find one on my phone. Going to be spending time with the wife over Christmas now and wondering if there are any good grown up board games that isn't monopoly, etc.

We play exploding kittens and love it but wondering if anyone else has any suggestions?

Carcassonne is pretty good with two players and one of the classic euro games.

Azul is another that I like and works as well with two as it does with more players.

Quadropolis is pretty fun, easy enough to learn, hard ish to master, I definitely have had fun when my strategy beats the others miraculously at the end.

probably good for older kids too.

Talisman, plus expansions, if you potentially have a number of hours spare. Ah just read "grown-up", whilst it can be, may be scoffed at by proper adults.

My recommendations:

Carcassonne - I think of it as a more nuanced form of dominoes.

Pandemic - just superb.

Pandemic Legacy (all three "series") - incredible concept, superb storytelling along with the game, and a true memory maker.

I also really like Battlestar Galactica - however it's got a massive "first game tax" where it's bloody impenetrable to get your head around. Stick with it, and some superb duplicitous play and tactics!

Catan is great, easy to pick up. Been playing lots over lockdown with the app and some friends

Pandemic legacy is a great shout. The first season is great and very topical right now. Currently halfway through the second season and really not enjoying it as much. For those who haven't played them, it's basically a board game you play through once with between 12 and 24 games with rules that change as the story progresses.

Also played battlestar galactica but didn't warm to that as much. Probably due to the first run through tax you mention.

Carcassonne is certainly the most accessible if the three.

We're on season zero (prequel) for Pandemic Legacy now.

Cold War era, spooks and agents and all sorts.

I can understand the second season not being as compelling - I think the future setting makes the immersion harder.

Scrabble . 2 player game should have 350+ points each. Dictonary for looking up words is allowed. No phones though.
