As I woke from my slumbers this morning vivid shards of brilliant sunlight radiated through the gaps in the bedroom curtains. Outside birdsong as if it was the first day of Spring. From downstairs the delicious aroma of bacon as my faithful wife cooked breakfast. I quietly speculated on what the day would bring, maybe a game of golf, a cosy fireside festive dinner in our local pub or how about a hood-down blast to Dover for a final Channel hop to optimise the wine supplies.

Then the alarm clock went off. It's still dark, it's hosing it down, it's the shortest day, Covid is rampant, Trump is about to ignite civil war in the U.S., the channel ports are locked down and we are under house arrest. The only ship that sails is the one that's navigating the course to a no-deal Brexit. Oh, and no bacon as the shops were dangerously crammed yesterday - so will have to make do with the crumbs in the bottom of the Corn Flakes packet.

So as a bit of a levity how about a Christmas Quiz ? I'll make a start with a few questions, some easy, some more obscure, all PH-orientated. Feel free to contribute your own, if there is interest I'll keep it going over the festive period. If not I'll sulk and prematurely open both the wine and one of the selection boxes.

Q1 - a lesser known F1 driver but his debut races were spectacular and outshone Senna, Fangio, Hamilton etc. Who is he ??

Q2 A familiar piece of street furniture but who is it named after ?

The pedestrian crossing lights (the "Belisha beacon") are named after Leslie Hore-Belisha, who was a Transport Minister during the 1930s.

For question 4, the clue's in the registration, I believe.

Just one more, one of the most successful racing cars of all times if you judge this on start:win ratio.

What is it, how did it happen ?

The Moskvitch 412 I do believe. Vaguely recall it enjoyed some success as a rally car?

Moskvich was cheap. BSCC was at the time split into classes on price, so the Moskvich was up against small city cars and smashed the class and the championship. It helped to have Tony Lanfranchi behind the wheel.

Q1 the driver is Giancarlo Baghetti who won his first two GP races and was touted as the next big thing. Not to be.

Q4 Is the GKN Lotus 47 with Buick engine.

Thats good going, Baghetti won his first 3 Grands Prix - 2 were non championship.

The Moskvich was in the under £600 class in the BSCC and, as you say, nailed it.

Now back to the velvet curtains and the link to Lord Belisha...?

Our posts crossed - Q4 is the GKN Lotus Europa with Buick engine.

PS Hore belisha died at Rheims - any connection to the 12-hour race there?

Are we talking about curtains at the end of straights which faced east/west in order not to dazzle drivers? Hadn't heard of that before. The race usually started at 12 midnight and ended at 12 noon before the Grand Prix in the afternoon which was often held in stifling heat.

I'll never forget Paul Hawkins breaking the absolute track record in his Lola T70 IN THE DARK!

The GKN Lotus has a bespoke chassis which is ten inches longer than the standard Europa, despite looking just like a Europa it's a very different animal throughout wink

Edit : the rear bumper of the Europa comes from the MkII Cortina.

Yes that’s it ! The entry to Thillois corner was in direct line with the rising sun, hence the velvet curtains.

I think we’re up to date, more later unless anyone wants to take the baton.

Any takers for the Lotus pole at Le Mans in the 1960's ??

Q8 - On the subject of Lotus - this is Jimmy Clark in the Lotus 30, not one of Chapman's finest efforts. It was superseded by the even scarier Lotus 40 - how did American driver Richie Ginther famously describe the 40 ??

I'm guessing that his goggles must have blown off ??
