My 10 year old has a real talent for drawing (yes, I would say that as her dad, but she does, honest...) and also loves electronics and gadgets, so I was thinking of combining the two and getting her a standalone graphics tablet, a laptop plus graphics tablet, or something like a galaxy tab s4 with s pen (approx £500 max budget).

I'm not sure which would give the most versatile and intuitive experience, she mostly does sketches in a anime style, but also just general drawing, shading etc, and I want it so she can just pick it up and get drawing without too much faf.

S4 seems well reviewed, although seen a surface go 2 which could be a contender, although then that brings a 300 - 350 laptop into budget combined with a graphics pad for 150 odd which may be even better.

I'm not sure which route to take, I don't want to spend a fortune and at 10 I want something that is easy for her to pick up when she feels like. S4 is probably the front runner but would really like to get others experience on this, I can't draw a stick person properly so am way under qualified to make a call on this.

Drawing directly on the screen is much different (arguably a lot better) than using a graphics tablet as an input device.

Is an iPad with appropriate pencil in budget?

Not an Apple fan at all, but a couple of friends who do a lot of graphics seem to love them

Thanks, I'll take a look, I had ruled out an ipad as assumed it'd cost too much, but worth a comparison.

Hi Graham, as she is 10 I would go iPad route.
When you have a bit more cash and she’s still
Showing interest, go MacBook Pro and Wacom tablet. Here is my quickly thrown together GFX

I got a 2nd hand IPad Pro 12.9 3rd gen. My daughter is on it all the time drawing and has actually designed mobile phone cases and is selling them.

But they are not cheap, iPad was £700 and the bloody pencil was over £100, I also got the magic keyboard another £350. Robbing bds

Ouch, I thought I may have to end up going ipad route but they certainly aren't cheap, and nice setup Mark!!

I'll start scouring the used and refurbished deals and see what I can find, thanks for the advice.

Have a look at an iPad with pencil and Procreate. You won’t need anything else for a longtime.
