My brother is looking for a cheap diesel estate that has the least gubbins engine wise to go wrong. I’ve suggested a Peugeot 2.0hdi of some sort having owned a 406 years ago that seemed to last forever wth little going wrong.

Ford Focus mk1 1.8TDdi (getting scarce but about)

Audi 80 Avant TDI (rare now!) - A4 could be a possible but I had a B5 and it was a dog!

Peugeot 306/406 HDi estates

I’ve got a an old Audi 1.9tdi as my shed runaround...pretty bullet proof, on 160k miles, see many each 250k easy

I had the Focus. The cambelt snapped, rebuilt the top end and it carried on for a few more years, think I sold it with 230k on the clock.

Brother has an A4 with the 1.9 that's got 290k on, still going strong.

Any of the 1.9 PD engines from VAG(except the 150 BHP one is apparently less reliable, don’t know if there’s much truth to that but I only had a 130)

Peugeot/Citroen 2.0 HDI or if you can find one the 1.9TD

Mercedes 250/300 TD engine

Volvo D5

Wrong answer sorry. . They only feel as if they last a long time, because they are sooooooo slow and dull, and it takes so long to get anywhere.

Volvo D5 euro 3 is my best answer, followed closely by the Pug 2.0 Hdi, and I'll whisper this, what about the Pug 1.4 Hdi from about 2005. Not bad little motors at all. I also quite like the Izusu 1.7 CDTI common rail jobbie. I only have one of these, but I have high hopes for mega miles from it.

Toyota 2.0 D4D is pretty good, though personally I love the little Toyota 1.4 D4D. Don't be tempted by the 2.2 D4D between 2006 and 2011.

The very old Isuzu 3.1 Td was a wickedly reliable robust lump too. But very old, and quite slow. But loads of torque.

The Ford 1.8 Tddi suffer fuel pump failures, due to the insistence of mounting the engine ECU inside the hot vibrating pump. As do most of the Vauxhall 2.0d and 2.2d.

Not short of good diesel engines to choose, just avoid (generally) the later German rubbish, and the PSA / Ford 1.6 DV6. (This is the worst engine ever made by anyone ever). With no exceptions!!

Our S Max is probably worth sub £1k 100k miles 13 years old it’s fine.

Previous Honda Accord 2.2 Idec 160k miles totally fine

These were cheap cars all they need is servicing and they keep going.
