My PC has one of these in,

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PGUSEBG/ref...

However, it make the most unholy noises for a while upon startup, and if you tap the case it eventually shuts up.

Found this in my pile of PC bits,

https://bjorn3d.com/2006/09/enermax-galaxy-850w-eg...

Seems well made, whats the thinking on whether to use that or get something a bit newer, and any recommendations. Not checked if it fits and if it has all the requisite connectors, or even fires up yet.

Spec is an AMD Ryzen 3900, 2060 Super, 32 GB, may upgrade the graphics to a 3080 when things settle down.

No reason not to use it though the energy efficiency may be a little less than more modern ones. Enermax are one of the good brands (though I did have to RMA one once, happens), though a bit longer than similar wattage is these days it is still ATX dimensions otherwise - as long there isn't a limit on how much room your case has lenghwise for PSUs

If you have a multimeter you could always plug the PSU in without it even being in the case or connected to anything, and check all the rails are within spec for voltage or outputting at all.

What sort of noise is the other one making?

Screeching and rumbling, think the fans is knackered, not sure if it settles down or just stops, then its fine all day but it takes longer each day before it shuts up, will whip the side off and have a look in the morning and see if it will fit and whats up.

I am not surprised with the Corsair VS, it is a cheap PSU designed for cheap systems. Yours requires something better

I would just grab a new one. Something nice with a Seasonic/SuperFlower/Delta OEM. Unfortunately PSU prices are stupid at the moment and have been for a while even pre-covid, but you can get some OK deals

Depends if you plan on overclocking. I've tried many PSUs in the past but have found Corsair to be most reliable. I am currently using RM750 and RM850i on my Ryzen build.

edit : I pretty much have same spec as you, 3900xt and 3090.

I wouldn't open a PSU unless you really know what you are doing

Opening it and working on it live - yes. Swapping a fan out - not really - just dont lick the caps just after turning it off.

You don't need to lick the caps, touching them is enough ..

Good point about not licking the caps

Many PSU fans plug into the PCB and can be safely unplugged as long as you play safe

Well, embarassing, took the side off and the racket wasnt the PSU, or dont think it was, seemed to be the DVD drive, so just unplugged it as who ever bothered with those these days ?

Didnt sounds like a drive kind of noise, I know they make a noise and then stop but it went on way longer, will see tomorrow but think its sorted.

Will spend a bit more next time and go for future proofing, its not that old really (2016) and had no issues, not sure why the DVD made so much.

Was going to swap to the Enermax but shelved that as my new Security Camera has arrived and have been repainting it black, as who wants a massive white monstrosity on the side of the house ? Wasnt entirely sure about painting a brand new £150 camera but its not going up looking like that.

Could be good business supplying cameras with a choice of many colours and shapes

Think it was a combination of the DVD drive and power supply, still a bit noisy, so will sort one out.
