Midi keyboard controller to Yamaha PSR-413 without computer

Hello,

Might be more one for the tech section but thought I'd try here.

Is it possible to get a Kwia VPC-1 (piano MIDI controller - no onboard sounds) to drive a Yamaha PSR-413 keyboard directly?

Normally it would be Kwia VPC-1 controlling a virtual piano on a PC/Mac which is a bit of pain for a quick practice as I need to bring the laptop and setup. I was thinking about getting a sound module but as I have a spare Yamaha PSR-E413 already, I was thinking could this be controlled by the other device?

Not sure if this is posible or if I need an interface of some kind to convert from MIDI/USB to USB plus associated cables?

Will the two connect to each other with a USB cable? I have a Roland RD700GX and if I connect one end of a USB cable to that and the other end to my MacBook Pro I can then use the Roland to play software synths in Logic Pro without any further complication.

I don't think it's that simple. There are USB devices and USB hosts. The keyboards both expect to connect to a USB Host, in the laptop example, the computer is the host, the keyboard is the device.

I would imagine some of the more sophisticated devices can be set to be host or device, in the same way as would have been achieved by default if you'd connected a midi cable to the "out" on one and the "in" on the other, though I'm not sure a Yamaha PSR-413 would offer that level of sophistication.

I'd say not. The Yamaha manual only describes downloading files to the keyboard, not enabling direct MIDI control of the internal tone generators (page 85 onwards):

P106 onwards in that manual describe the MIDI implementation table. This implies it can be controlled externally. (See Note on top RHS of page 106)
