I moved into a new house a couple of years ago, now I'm pretty good at identifying cars no matter what age, however I kept on walking past a house a few doors along and at the back of the double length garage there was a car parked up and I couldn't figure out what on earth it was.

Move onto summer, I'm walking down the street and I hear an almighty rumble and the old boy drives past me, in the most amazing sounding car.

I have a chat with him, it's a Fiat Supersonic bodied 427 Cobra breathed on by Holman-Moody and built for Ford dealer John Willment.

I do a Google and this is the car:

https://mycarquest.com/2016/07/fiat-cobra-yep.html
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/willment-co...

I saw that Fiat Supersonics are going for $2m, I wonder if this is worth more or less?

I'm slightly obsessed by it, I think its amazing.

Anyone know anymore about it?

On another note have any of you stumbled across cool cars a stones throw from where you live?

I have a vague recollection of the advert from Rod Leach’s Nostalgia mentioning that it was thought to be one of two, which doesn’t really fit in with the story. I do recall that it was up for sale for quite a while.

It was built using 427 chassis CSX3055.

I first saw it back in the 70's, and have seen it one since it's restoration was finished.

Its a fabulous thing.....a similar rebody of a Fiat Supersonic had been done a decade earlier with a Jag XK140 IIRC.

I knew Rod quite well in the 80s, but kind of lost touch. Is he still going, and driving COB 1? I hope so.

I think he sold COB 1 a few years ago....?
I seem to remember it being listed at a Christie's auction 2/3 years ago, maybe?

Saw the Willment Cobra stored in a Ford Transit dealer in Stratford, East London back in the mid-80s. Walking past, my jaw dropped to the pavement as I knew just what it was. hehe

It must have been some sort of low rent storage facility for some swanky dealer as there was a 250 SWB and Espada in there shortly after.

I'd never even heard of them before TBH. Quite lovely and the wheels are stunning

This used to be owned by a dealer called Michael Fisher who posts a lot on Instagram https://instagram.com/brdcspeedman?igshid=

A recent post states that he bought it in Fort Lauderdale in 1990 and later passed it on to DK.

The mycarquest.com link says "He directed his underlings to go down to the junkyard and find a body for it and they came back with an aluminum body designed by Giovanni Savonuzzi and hand built by Ghia, originally fitted to a Fiat 8V chassis."

What kind of junkyard did they go to and what else was there redface

Thats very interesting. I'm going to have to have a chat with the fella that owns it some more. I had my 4 year old at the time with me last time and he just wanted me to move on

Its a shame that the widening and recrafting of the rear wings/quarters to accommodate the 427 rear end and wheel width meant loosing some of the design elements of the original body, including the lovely original circular rear light clusters and the swage line.
It still looks great from the front and front quarter view but not so great when you move to the back.

Not sure I agree with that, not a body I like at all.

It is very much of its day (early 1950s).

Read an article about it many years ago (20 or 30 years), I suspect in either C&SC or CC as I subscribed to both at the time. Seem to remember it had a poor reputation, handling-wise, but it was floated that the issues may have been because it wasn't sorted, rather than an inherent problem. I think the person behind the original build was disappointed and didn't continue to develop it.
