Hello all. For a K8 GSXR1000 can someone recommend a set of low ish cost panniers please? I’ve seen that you can get throw over types for about £100 but also that it makes sense to mount a frame because otherwise they will flap about. Utterly inexperienced in this area so and advice will be warmly received.

Consider a rack - had this on a 2018 gsxr1000 for a trip, worked a treat.

I'd be having a look at hepco becker sports racks. They replace the pillion perch. We'll engineered, but not cheap. I put an Oxford tail pack on mine. Anything else will risk your paintwork...

Kriega US30 or 20 with a 10 or a couple of 5s on top or on the side if you need more. Straps attached to the rear subframe under the pillion seat, then the US20 sitting on the pillion seat.

Not cheap, but completely waterproof, easy to remove and very secure. If you pack right, you can avoid it scratching the paintwork at all, as it will only be contacting the bike on the seat. This worked very well on my old Street Triple RX, a bike with basically no luggage space whatsoever.

I went for a Renntec Sports Rack as opposed to the type that fits on passenger area....why?.... it means I can still throw my leg over the saddle as opposed to doing some sort of mutated hurdling technique to mount the bike. Only issue is grab rail intrudes onto load area... I then fasten Kreiga stuff on it... i know you said cheap. There are loads of soft luggage at cheaper prices to fit on with straps.

I bolted a top box to my renntec rack...or you can bolt a box to a second hand pillion seat, which ive done with my S1000R.

Doing this on my 2020 ZX10R, probably the Ventura setup, once you have the L bars and rack you can use the rack on its own or add bags, even a top box.

I've done the Renntec rack thing - in fact that is what is on my 4XV - bolt a topbox to it when required.

On my current R1 I've got Ventura brackets and I have both a carrier rack and a topbox plate I can install depending what I am doing.

Word of warning on the Renntec rack + top box thing. Be very careful about this - I used to have a 2008 R1 and the subframe on that was cast aluminium - sticking a topbox on a Renntec rack makes for a lot of flex and vibration on it and cause mine to break up quite badly, could have been catastrophic really. I got it very expertly welded.

So do be careful if you go down that route.

What year is your R1? What do you think of the Ventura system? About to order for my ZX10R

2017 (ie latest)

It’s pretty versatile - I usually just leave the main mounting brackets on which are fairly unobtrusive. I’ve a flat rack (has no grab rail loop) and you gan get these beefy brackets to attach a top box plate to. Makes big weeks away on a sports bike a lot easier, and when you’re there it just whips off.
