My Mk6 Golf R + recent history
Discussion
I've owned this lovely Tornado Red Golf R for a little while now. I've always been a lover of the VW Golfs as they genuinely (imo) do everything so bloody well. Prior to this I've owned a Mk5 GTI, a facelift M135i and a Mk5 R32.
I sold the M135i as I just wasn't using it enough and then bought an R32 as I wanted something which still sounded decent/sporty. That kept me going for a little while until somebody offered me all my purchase price + nice bonus and I couldn't resist the offer so I sold it. I then thought it was only right that I got into the next model up. I could have got the Mk7 R (which is probably a better car), but the rarity of this appealed along with the condition, miles, spec etc.
It's come pretty well specced from factory with the following options:
- It's just ticked over 45k Miles
- DSG
- Heated Leather
- Dynaudio
- Reverse Camera
- Front & Rear sensors
- Dynamic Chasis Control - Adaptive dampers
- Sunroof
- Adaptive headlights
- Sat-Nav
So far in my ownership it all seems very nice and it drives pretty well. The one major gripe I had with it was it sounded terrible! I was coming from 2 cars which sounded pretty good for hatches though - the R32 (full Milltek system with sportscats) & M135i (MPerformance exhaust) both sounded a whole lot better. I've tried to rectify it on this with a Milltek 3" turbo-back (sports cat) - though I've only fitted the catback section for now.
Work I've done so far on the Golf R since August 2020
- A full service at VW
- Haldex pump replaced and service carried out at AKS tuning (a renowned TFSI specialist)
- Cambelt and waterpump replaced at AKS
- Changed the PCV valve to the latest revision
- Changed the DV to a Rev G as it was still on the original Dev D from factory.
- Changed the cam follower - though the old one was fine upon removal
- Installed the catback section of the Milltek exhaust
To do in the (near) future
- Install the sportscat downpipe
- Purchase a HPFP upgrade
- Potentially get an upgraded intercooler (though I've heard the standard ones are good for under 400hp)
- Install some H&R Lowering springs (already purchased, but haven't got around to installing them yet)
- Book it in for a mapping session
Here's some pictures of some of the cars I've previously owned, and the current Golf R.
M135i - I loved this car!

Golf R32 - This car definitely sounded a lot faster than it ever was going.

And the current Golf R

I'll keep this updated when I eventually do anything big / major upgrades.

Nice selection there, the R32 in silver looks very understated, will always be a classic for me. Yes they are not the fastest but offer so much more character than some of the turbo 4 pots hot hatches. Like you I like to own cars which are relatively exclusive so can see why you went down the mk 6 route rather than mk7 .
Good choice and a nice example, though I think the black wheels always look lost. They what's catch my eye when you see one.
Regarding their apparent scarcity, from purchasing my mk7 Gtd I was educated by the vw salesman the mk6 r enjoyed limited production. A 1 R per x hundred humdrum golf sales for example, whereas every single mk7 could've been an r if that's how the orders flowed in.
Of course, every spotted oik could've walked into a vw dealer and leased one for some silly price a month by mk7 time.

Thanks all for your kind comments
Red wasn't my first choice I'll admit but when I saw it in the flesh I was hooked. The red and black just work so well for me.
I believe the bulbs probably do need replacing, but they're more than adequate with regards to light output for the moment.
I figured I'd give it a wash and upload some fresh photos with the shiny Milltek installed.

Thanks again!

Love it. Nearly bought one of these. I think they look great, a solidity lacking in the 7R. Also, far less of them out there.I sold the M135i as I just wasn't using it enough and then bought an R32 as I wanted something which still sounded decent/sporty. Yours looks lovely! - Your new motor isn't bad either :P. I'm more of a sucker for the standard look so probably won't be going with any splitters etc. Maybe a set of wheels, but that can wait for the moment.
Thanks!

Thanks - The 7.5 looks lovely in my eyes - but it's just far too common for my liking. What did you go for in the end? Andy655 said:
The Mk6 R is a rare beast indeed, anyone know how many VW brought in to the UK?
It's pretty rare. From the limited research I did when buying this I read VW UK brought over ~800 of these over. Of those 800 about ~20 were red. Not sure what the split with DSG / Sunroof etc is but my spec is pretty rare. I'm only missing the "Wingback" seats - which I'm not too keen to sit in on a long drive - though they do look stunning. chippy348 said:
Nice looking Golf, not knowing mush about them, what year is yours and what sort of price range are they ?
Thank you. Mine is a late 2010. There's not many of them around so not surprised you don't know too much about them. I think they're pretty much an Audi S3 rebodied. You can get them from around ~£8/9k for a categorised/high mileage one. And they go all the way up to £20k+ depending on the spec / miles / history etc. Edited by 7heGeneral on Sunday 27th December 22:23

The Mk6 R is the only 'R' variant i've not had, although i did have an ed30 with the larger turbo TFSI engine thats more or less the one in a MK6 R and i always felt anxious about it letting go, i think i read the internet too much on that one though. After my Mk5 r32 i felt the same as you and ended up with an estate Mk7 'R', which is rarer than the normal Mk7 R and bypassed the 6. However good it was i couldnt forgive the noise after the r32!
I do love the look of the 6 though and do remember my friends dad getting one brand new when they first came out and being very impressed by it. I hope it treats you well!
