Pick a car for my sister.

1) absolute top budget is £3k and I don't want any finance
2) don't want an estate but happy with either big or small
3) fuel economy doesn't really bother me, as you say I mostly just pootle about town
4) doesn't need to be fast but does need to have power so don't want anything less than 1.8l (if that's the right terminology)
5) not keen on automatic, don't want anything too shiny but also need to check insurance prices once I know number plate or make/model! Don't want it to be really expensive.

History is Ford KA, SMART FOR FOUR, Mercedes C180 Kompressor hatch.

She's open to the idea of unusual cars.

Sorry, but this thread is no better than the posts on local facebook groups asking for recommendations for a plumber, electrician, builder, etc. ie. everyone will come back with a different answer.

The answer to your question is basically anything under £3k, so some sort of generic small(ish) hatchback is probably the answer

The point is that the ask is so vague that the answer could be absolutely anything from a BMW X5 to a Renault Megane. Both are less than £3k, more than 1.8l and 'big or small'

For people who have no interest in cars and want something mundane and reliable at that price the best awsner is Honda Jazz, very boring but very rebiable

Ring them tomorrow & if it checks out buy it you sister will be happy with a free Audi convertible & you have 1k to spend on servicing it & carrying out some maintenance.

If it was an easy answer I wouldn't be asking. She started off saying she wanted an old 5-door Saab 93. Found loads of links to those and then she said she didn't want one.

She is interested in cars but not in the same way I am. Rejected my early suggestions of a Focus or KA for instance.

Whereabouts do you live? I assume you're not going to travel across the country for a £3k car. It's all very much on condition at that price.

I'd be looking for Suzuki Swifts etc

I work on many cheap motors and wouldn’t buy a jazz as they rust quite badly.

A getz would be my top choice and I have looked after three for years and they have been grand.

I don't mind travelling for the right car. She's in London, I'm in Anglesey. I once went from London to Aberdeen by air to pick up a car. Drove it home.

The Suzuki Swift does get a good writeup but she's never had a jap car and I've only had one before. Just not as nice as European cars. I know they're reliable.

Question is why she rejected those. You’re more likely to meet her criteria if you can identify why she liked the idea of a Saab but not a Focus or KA. Have any of her friends got a car she likes? Does styling matter? Colour? Number of doors? SatNav? Must be able to get something to go on here.

If she doesn’t want to answer questions like those then I think the problem is she either doesn’t want a new car, or really doesn’t want help choosing it.

(Or this is one of those posts designed to wind up car enthusiasts. In which case a Honda Jazz)

There is a 2.0 Mark3 Initiale. Quite rare though, most are 1.6.

You can buy them for about £1,990, that leaves £1,010 for the first couple of months' repair bills.

I'd have that Cortina, who wouldn't want that? The Land Rover is good as well, for the unusual colour if nothing else.
