I’m lucky enough to have a sinn finance 6099. I am interested in getting another watch, a little more plain and less complicated. I very much like the look of the calibre 5 with a white face.

Are there any good alternatives or reasons not to buy this?

Calibre 5 relates to the movement and is not the watch's model name. It is a little contrived in this instance, as it is a 2824-2 or clone. TAG Heuer will make several watches with this movement, so you would need to narrow it down a little.

That is very nice looking watch - they also appear to retain the old Tag Heuer emblem rather than the nasty new one.

One of my watches is a Carrera chronograph with the calibre 1887 movement. I’ve had it around 8 years and it is generally used as a daily and for holidays etc - it has been faultless and the quality is excellent.

I didn't understand their wish to de-Techniques d'Avant Garde TAG. If they are disassociating themselves from TAG then this would've been the ideal time to revert to the company's original name: Heuer SA.

I’ve got the same watch but the black face and steel strap variant.

It’s a nice reliable watch. I’ve worn it as a daily but it’s barely been out of its box for about a year now as I favour my hybrid Kronaby watch which has a similar subtle look.

Mine was bought for me as a gift when they were retailing at under £1300. If you’d like one I’d suggest looking for a preowned one from a reputable source as there’s quite a bit of depreciation from their current new price.

Yep. TAG values tank from new so shop around, haggle and/or look pre-owned.

The standard joke is that the security guards at the flagship TAG boutique in London are there to keep people in.

Lovely watch. Best of luck.

Going slightly off topic I think the fact that they’ve almost doubled the new price in the last ten years has helped the second hand value of mine stay at least within sight of the price it was new.

Not that depreciation matters if you’re keeping a watch forever but it’s worth considering if you ever want to sell a watch to fund an upgrade.

They do - but (apart from Rolex), name a mass production watch manufacturer whose values don’t?

And then when you actually compare Tag Heuer with the likes of Ball, they don’t actually do too badly with residuals. They are a brand that some people with little knowledge love to hate.

Thanks for the above advice. I'm not in a massive rush to get one so would happily shop around. Where's a good place to look for used watches? Watchfinder?

My Sinn came from Jura in Leeds.

Another even simpler watch I like is the Junghans Max Bill. Like this

Hi OP, I’ve got that watch and love how subtle and understated it is. I have it with a brown leather strap but same colourings. It’s lovely and simple. I’ve got a number of watches, with around 7 of them being Tags and this is one of the prettiest I own, just something very British and classy about it amongst a sea of oversized watches (of which I’m guilty of owning too!)

I bought one as a daily, had one years ago too it's a great steel daily watch.

As said make sure to buy at a good price as values tank if you ever plan to resell.

If you do buy used make sure the bracelet is in good nick their hard to polish because of the fineness of the polished centre links (very thin parts)

As others have said, try to get a good discount, or buy used, if the drop in value worries you.

Watchfinder have a 2020 mint condition Day + Date model in stock for £1750:

https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Tag%20Heuer/Carrera/...

Or the same one as you posted, for £1650:

https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Tag%20Heuer/Carrera/...

But, at £2k brand new, it wouldn't bother me if I bought one new and walked out the shop and lost £500 as it isn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I tend to buy used when it's something that retails new for £10k and then drops to £5k after a couple of years, because losing that sort of money just seems silly.

Thanks for those links. I'd probably go second hand as I intend to wear this watch a lot and it's bound to get scuffs etc. The Sinn certainly has and unless something terrible happens and I need to liquidate all my assets I'll almost certainly never sell it.

I don’t hate TAG Heuer, in fact my good lady is wearing a restored 1994 automatic as I type. It’s a lovely watch and she likes it a lot. Steveo made a custom deployant strap for her.

I bought a cheap Tag GMT, sent it to Anglesey Watches for Joe to work his magic, unfortunately it was stolen out the box. I was pretty gutted!

I suppose those rules apply for all mass market watch producers. If you buy a Ball watch at full RRP you need to give your head a wobble.

This is a rather snide comment. You can know a great deal about Heuer and TAG Heuer and still conclude that their quality has slipped as their prices have rocketed.

It would probably be a more accurate appraisal, to state that TAG Heuer are the brand that people who have little real knowledge love to love.

Snide? You go for it fella. laugh

I’d love to hear of your recent personal experience of their quality slipping.
