Hi,

Bit of help needed, was washing the car yesterday and noticed the below in the paint on the rear quarter panel, any idea what it is? the car is booked in at BMW on 8th for them to have a look, 100% wasn't an issue when the car was last washed and waxed - sub 2 months ago?

Moisture under the paint.

Was it a new car?

No I purchased it at just under 3 years old. BMW paint warranty is 12 years I believe, that's if the paint is original.

No, the car is normally garaged or on the drive..

I have not looked into getting it sorted but it may be possible to have it wet sanded, that’s just a guess thought and in reality the proper fix is to get it resprayed.

not looking good then.

Will still take it to BMW see what they say and then find a decent local shop to sort it.

Best of luck. Twice I have tried to claim under the BMW paint warranty. Both times they have wiggled and denied claiming it was not original paint. Dispute me on one occasion getting it tested by a paint shop who said it was original paint thickness. They still said it wasn’t original paint.

Maybe it’s just my local dealership. But I have always found on none paint issues they have been very helpful. Moment you mention paint it’s like they do a 180.

Wish you luck.

TBF, just because it's original paint thickness, doesn't automatically mean it's the original paint.

If the panel's been sanded back to bear metal, and then resprayed, it could easily be "original paint thickness", without being "original paint"

The chances of painting a single panel the same colour and the same thickness to the other panels from factory must be practically zero.

I’m not sure how that defence by the dealership stands up to scrutiny.

If a car gets a scratch/dink at the factory, do they just rework it in the paint department, like every other manufacturer ?

Or is it a case of “That one’s got a scratch, set fire to it” smile

absolutely zero because the factory paint is put on by robots in carefully controlled environment, not a human rushing between fag breaks. It took me 3 dealers to find one willing to not arse around too much and do my f10 door corrosion. All of them played the paint thickness card. The third dealer tried that on too, but in the end did the work. They had made a fuss about paint being 90 microns otherwise its a non bmw finish. So When I got the car back i said ok lets see the paint depth now then... they wouldnt but did concede it would be 200-300 at that stage so in future unless someone knew bmw authorised repairer had been at it, it could be rejected for not being original paint. BMW not what they were even ten years ago imo, but there you go.

good luck OP, hope you find a good dealer.

Anything less 120 mirons is some slick paint job. I'd suspect that any repair work would be more like 200-300. The OP photos suggest a strip back treatment and repaint at a cliamate controlled paint shop and not some back alley outfit.

Ive seen a car cover do this especially on a car that has recently had new paint. On a rear quarter if it has had a repair/ replacement quarter in the past it is near on impossible to stop the corrosion from eventually coming back through over time.

My local dealer were really good with the two paint issues I’ve had (MINI door seals eating the sill pain and rust on my tailgate). No quibbles or attempts to wriggle out of it; cars were booked in quickly enough. Never in charged me for the courtesy car excess waiver like they said they would either. Admittedly both issues were on cars that I’ve owned since new.

Good luck getting it sorted op.

Just as an update, they wouldn't do it under warranty, smart repair on the area proved by paint depth, they priced up the work and it was surprisingly reasonable, got the car in next day and 3 days later its back, looks like they have done a good job and now the panel they have painted has a lifetime paint warranty.....
