£5k ish cheap to run car - Page 1 - Car Buying

Hi all.

My other half’s RAV4 has given up the ghost and she needs a reasonably cheap to run car for travelling 70 mile round trips to university and then to placement (student midwife).

She has £5k ish and wants something reasonably modern, sensible running costs and ideally an automatic.

I was thinking hybrid Toyota Yaris but it would be a bit of budget creep.

Reliability is a priority because she doesn’t want to be stranded which has just happened with the RAV4.

Any suggestions would be well received.

Anything Japanese will be less likely to fail generally, but as your wife has discovered - nothing is certain.

What went wrong with it?

E.g. If you say "the timing chain went" then people will know not to advise buying a 1 series or mini, as they are known to have timing chain issues on some engines.

The worst thing you could do is advise her on a replacement that has "The failure that she just suffered" as a major problem plastered all over the internet.

It had done 140,000 miles and had a cold start issue which led to the starter going.

She may be as well just PCPing something cheap and new.
