Mazda 6 (~2011)
Discussion
Hello folks,
Hoping to get onto the property ladder in the next year and currently have an alfa romeo guilietta diesel (2l 170bhp). With covid and wfh i'm not doing the milage to justify a diesel anymore, and when it dies or becomes uneconomical to repair i want to be able to quickly switch to a "reliable family car".
We're budgeting up to 4k, and my favourite of all the cars i've looked at for this kind of money on autotrader is the mazda 6 either as a hatch or estate.(we've considered a civid mk8 1.8 N/A, focus mk3 1.6 ecoboost, cee'd mk2 1.6 N/A, Astra Mk6 1.4T and a Mk6 Golf 1.4 TSI)
I think the estate will be more useful for building materials, skip runs and a dog (when we eventually get one) but are obviously a tad more expensive and less available than the saloons.
Just wanted to know what people's opinions are generally of the Mk2 Mazda 6. Would be looking at the 2010/11 facelift and specifically either the 2L or 2.5L petrol.
They seem to be fairly reliable and have many of the modcons of the premium german saloons (with japanese reliability!).
Anyone have any experience of either the 2L or 2.5L in either hatch or estate form?

I've got the later 2013 model, the GJ, and it's a lovely car to drive.
I believe the engines in the GH are co-developed with Ford so should be reliable with parts easy to source.
An extra grand or 2 would fetch you a newer GJ model. Might be worth using your vehicle as a P/X now before it's ruined with low mileage driving on diesels? Cheapest petrol estate I can see on AutoTrader is £6390 in that stunning soul (?) red Mazda do. I'd say that's £6k after a haggle, plus whatever your car is worth. Assuming it's in good condition and isn't galactic mileage then I can't see getting more than £2k being difficult.

No experience of the petrol, ran a 2010 diesel Takuya for 3.5 years and mostly I enjoyed running it: big comfy car, silly amounts of space for the footprint, decent looking and enough toys excepting satnag. Downsides that made me get rid of it were DPF issues (not applicable to the petrol), the stupid seat bolt design that caused the drivers seat to rock and could lead to collapse and the rear shocks needed replacing after modest mileage making it wearing to drive long distance.
But they were excuses; most of all the reason I got rid was the car was utterly s
t boring to drive, the Mondeo I had previously was far more involving and if I was in the market for that type of car again I would probably choose a Mondeo, although I'd have a good look at a Superb too.

The pick of the range is the 2.5 Sport with some haggling you can get a nice one with sensible miles on budget:

Also look for the 2.0T Mondeo (the Mazda uses Mondeo underpinnings) in Titanium spec but it is auto only:
