Afternoon all

My Xmas film watching has been interrupted by a fault with my AVR

On 2 channel mode it's spot on. But switch it to movie (ie surround sound) and it immediately goes really quiet, like the sound is distant or underwater, and then it clicks off with "protector" flashing.

So far i have

- tried it with other speakers...same symptoms
- I use Banana plugs, and checked there's no crossed wires
- tried different TV /digital source...same symptoms
- unplugged all rear surround speakers, just playing through fronts: will sometimes click off on protector mode, sometimes just stay on, but remain distant/watery

(I'd expect the fronts to be quieter in surround mode, but if I was listening to music at 20/70 volume, and moved to surround, I have to put the volume up to say 40/70 to get back to the same level... which suggests there's more to it than just normal level adjustment)

Took the lid off... there's no smoking gun I can see, but didn't expect to find one tbh. Nothing seems to be getting hotter than anything else

My older Sony str 445 used to lose rear channels with a distinct click, which I believe is due to dry solder joints. This is not the same symptom at all.

Receiver is circa 2015 I believe..got it on eBay a year ago for about £200, along with a bunch of second hand mordaunt short speakers. I'm not ready to ditch 5.1 just yet

So I think my choices are
- take to hifi repair shop and maybe throw£50-£100 at it for a repair? But this will quickly get uneconomic

- get another 2nd hand unit for £200 ish (Yamaha, Denon, onkyo, Sony etc nothing particularly fancy needed) hope for a few good years?

-go new, about £350-£400 like for like, hope for several years?

My question, after all of that, was whether anyone recognises these symptoms? Which might make option one either a no brainer (oh yeah, simple fix) or complete waste of time (good money after bad.)

I will probably press avr into service as spare room music only amp.

Thanks for reading

Ian

The only time i ever heard an amp where the sound was faint and underwater it was a DAC problem.
Your amp working OK in 2 channel mode (where the DACs are almost certainly not on/used) and faulty in multi-channel looks like this could be the case here, but i'm no engineer.

I would personally prefer to buy new - latest soec and also decent warranty.
Richer Sounds look to have loads of amps in the £200-£400 range.

Evening all,

Quick update- I decided not to throw money at repair shop diagnostics, and bought myself richer sound's cheapest avr - a Yamaha something or other at £230.

I refused their £6 next day delivery charge, but what do you know? It turned up next day anyway.

It sounds perfectly adequate for films, but a bit of a step down from the Sony str 1080 I think when it comes to music presence, especially at low volumes.

The wife is still tolerating my 5.1 setup, so hopefully this will last as long as the 6 year warranty it has. Anything beyond that is a bonus smile
