"A new feature-length documentary tells the story of Steve McQueen's attempts to make the Formula 1 film, Day of The Champion, with newly-unearthed film that offers a unique, full-colour view of racing in 1965"

https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/single...

"Now, for the first time, rushes from early filming for Day of The Champion have been revealed to take centre stage in The Lost Movie – and the footage is stunning, at least equal to the contemporary F1 scenes captured in Grand Prix and arguably even more sensational."

Steve McQueen: The Lost Movie will be shown on Sky Documentaries and NOW TV on January 1, then will be available via streaming thereafter.

Just had Motor Sport delivered by the post today. I haven't read the article yet as I've been working all day but it looks interesting. I understand that he was initially involved with "Grand Prix" but left very early on the the planning stage.

I can just imagine a Steve McQueen grand prix film.
Take the 1966 film grand prix and chop out all the bits that are not cars racing and replace them with
Steve McQueen standing around or leaning against a wall trying to look interesting.
How lucky we are it never got made.

I guess that depends on if you like Steve McQueen though eh, I rather think he is one of the coolest blokes to walk the earth as an actor, so it would not bother me!

Watched it tonight. Pretty good all round. Interesting. Previously unseen film and also new information to me on the rivalry between the two projects.

Worth a watch for the Nurburgring footage in particular - absolutely stunning.

This is why there wasnt any Nurburgring footage in Grand Prix. They filmed it but had to hand it over to Sturgess after a legal fight, leaving script references to the race only.

I wonder if there was an issue with the British GP at Brands as well. In "Grand Prix" we only get a tiny bit of on-track action and a lot of pre and post race shenanigans - including an interview with Raymond Baxter.

I need to watch it again but I'm sure the segment recalling the infamous Carlisle/McQueen Mini battle at Brands included some footage from Oulton..

I've had this for 'a while' but haven't watched it yet. There is definitely OP footage in it - I've seen that just flicking through it.

OK, when Tier 4 bites there are always trivial things to do that can help prevent boredom/insanity.

This is the section of “Brands” spliced into the footage between Paddock and Bottom (as it was known then) bend.

Not a criticism - just an observation, it made for a brief period of very watchable TV over the festive period.

Facing backwards on a Lola sports racer at racing speeds whilst perched high up on a throne between the exhausts -hope they paid the cameraman well.

I'm not sure what you mean "for a while" because the footage was only shown for the first time on New Year's Day.

Having said that, they definitely did shoot footage at Oulton Park as they wanted to show some sports car racing in the final film.

The point being made above is that they were also mixing and matching images from both Brands and Oulton in what was supposedly the same race.

Only a week or so then - I thought you might have had some secret access to the footage - damn.

It seems that there is more out there and the chap who unearthed what was shown in the documentary is on the hunt for it. There is an excellent article on the topic in the most recent edition of Motor Sport magazine. It's their front cover too -

Just searched for this on Now TV, and I can't find it.

Can someone confirm that it's made it's way on to the peasant platform or not?

I found it on my Virgin package under the "Sky Documentaries" section.
