The capacity has been faked.
They get smaller capacity drives and fool the firmware into thinking they are bigger but anything you put on it will end up corrupted.
It's an old scam that keeps popping up.

I got scammed this way about 15 years ago. Was supposed to be a 2gb but when it corrupted I tore it down and it was a 128mb chip inside.
I only buy branded ones now from reputable suppliers but fakes are getting everywhere now.

If it's really valuable, surely it is valuable enough to spring for two drives to put it on?

+1

TBH i store pretty much everything i want to keep on the cloud. USB sticks just for music or movie files or for moving files about.

Definitely wouldnt want to trust them as a sole backup option.

I have photos and music on two separate hard drives and all my photos on a Samsung T5 (which often come down to half the price currently being asked).
I've lost photos in the past when a HDD failed so now ensure I always update the backups.
Not a fan of the Cloud TBH.

As an easy way to get an extra copy, off site, of critical files it is hard to beat.

Cloud is high resilience, high reliability, dedicated storage.

My phone photos are auto backed up to the cloud and accessible immediately on my other devices. Files can be accessed instantly from multiple devices.

Computer crashes and takes out the hard drive? Not a problem, reinstall Win 10 to a newly fitted hard drive and your files are all there. No cheek clenching moments or hoping to recover files.

Why would you want to own the storage system? We're talking Microsoft Onedrive here or Amazon storage , not some bloke in Asia storing your files on his PC hard disk.

And its not a matter of "hoping it works when you need it".

I've OneDrive running and it appears like another HDD folder on my PC. Always there, always usable.

Exactly and on secure high resilience hardward too. Not some dodgy USB drive that you hope will work in a years time (been there and done that many times).

If i'd ever a total PC failure i'd a cheek clenching wait, hoping i'd get my OS up and running again and recover my files or fumble about hoping an external drive i'd stored stuff on was still working.

Not now. I can have a new HDD in a PC or a new machine up and running with all my files accessible again in about 30 minutes.

And? They had an outage, service was restored. No files were lost. Thats the whole point.

They have a crash, with the resilience they have on their storage estates and its just a matter of waiting for it to come back up again.

Also, with the likes of OneDrive you can opt to automatically store files locally too on your local machine for offline access anyway.

Some single user PC crashes with the user relying on a USB drive for "backup", then they've potentially got a big problem.

Don't like the idea of paying someone to look after my property, rather buy hard drives for on site and off site backups of very important files, also when needing the files they are there to be quickly got at

Don't like the idea of having to upload 2 Tb of files to someone else's computer and then if having a problem having to use full bandwidth constantly downloading the backup over a period of 5 to 6 days to get it all back

Some people just don’t want to be helped because they know it all already.

Seriously, not backing up to the cloud ‘because it’s somebody else’s computer’... rolleyes

Am I wrong for laughing when tin foil hat wearing luddites lose their precious media?

Use H2TestW to check capacity (and read write speeds) - https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscel...

It's choice. Every technical solution out there has pros and cons. Some people value some over others.

I limit what gets stored in the cloud too. Mainly for security/privacy reasons. But also yes, "because it’s somebody else’s computer". That "somebody else" benevolently giving me 100Gb of "free" storage may not be so benevolent in future. And nothing but nothing is "free".

Horses for courses. Everything has its place.

USB sticks for backups though? Not for me. Especially unbranded cheap ones. Asking for trouble.

Yes seriously

Cloud is a name that attracts many gullible people, that's not to say that gullible people are posting here. Files aren't uploaded into any clouds, they are uploaded to someone else's computer, it's a fact and you wouldn't bet good money on it be anything else would you?

If you do wish to part with some good money I will gladly take it from you
