Exporting a VAT Qualifying Car to Jersey- help needed please
Discussion
Hello,
I was wondering if someone can help as the HMRC forums are not that clear to me.
I have just recently moved to Jersey in Channel Islands and plan on buying a 'VAT Qualifying' car in the UK to export to here straight away. I know there are some specialist garages etc that do this but the car I want I have found from a larger dealership who are not familiar with the process, neither am I.
What I am not clear on is the way in which I should be buying the car, should I pay the VAT and be able to claim this back, can the dealership sell me the car with no VAT etc?
I don't want to end up buying the car plus VAT then end up on the hook for the charges here with no way to claim the VAT back so would appreciate some advice please?
The importing in to Jersey seems clear enough as I complete a declaration, pay GST etc etc. Its the UK VAT process...
Thanks

Is this the info you need?

I think it is up to the dealer if they want to play ball with you on this or not

Thanks for the response, yes I have read through all of the government advice but it’s not clear to me.
Was looking for more practical advice from anyone who had exported a car to the Channel Islands and understand the process or happy even to employ an intermediary if anyone can recommend one?
Thanks

Last time I did this it was very easy, the garage just records an export sale and doesn't charge you VAT. However, I understand from a friend who is looking to import again that garages are a lot less willing to take part as apparently HMRC did a few inspections last year and the garages hadn't been keeping adequate records so got stung for the VAT not collected. You may find they charge you the VAT and only refund when you can prove the car is registered in Jersey (the pain of which I also recall from my time there, it's a lot easier over here).
As the other poster said, best call the garage and discuss.

Thanks for the advice, I think as you mention it comes in to the garages willingness to do this. Jersey side this makes sense although may take some time but its getting it zero vatted in the UK for direct export so I only pay that price only the supplier can decide.
I was literally chatting with someone earlier who told me how much easier the process is in Guernsey!
Thanks

Yes, it's essentially a one page form and a cheque over here. I recall having to arrange the vehicle inspection etc. in Jersey, felt like a complete joke on a nearly new motor when I then bought a complete and utter shed from a local a few months later that would never pass an MoT!Thanks for the advice, I think as you mention it comes in to the garages willingness to do this.
