'Jah' nuary - Reggae, Roots, Dub, Ska, Bluebeat, Rocksteady
Discussion
OK new thread time - amongst many other things I am a massive ska / dub fan
Jah-nuary thread celebrates classics/new/variants of reggae and all its wonderful sub genres / remixes
My first contribution is my lifelong hero Lee 'Scratch' Perry who has been the longest soundtrack to my life. The Dub reggae scene seemed to run parallel with punk in the late 70's/early 80's so we used to go see all the reggae bands as well as the punk ones.
I love Lee Perry because of his crazy eccentric perspective and the way he works with so many other artists and experiments with his own sounds - way too many to mention - he was the original Upsetter! He's a clever songwriter, and very funny. And even in his 80's he is STILL playing live (I last saw him 2 years ago).
Kicking off with this classic / iconic Perry classic 'Chase The Devil' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hVwwH8TDco

Who else is a dub/ska/reggae fan?

This album was released in 2002 - Gorillaz dub remix album of their own tracks
Laika Come Home - Gorillaz vs Spacemonkeyz

I think it's absolutely brilliant. Nearly 20 years old and I still listen to it a lot.

The Skatalites are fabulous, if you like ska - They have been around since 1963!
Still playing live - saw them a couple of years ago on their anniversary tour.

We had the Mad Professor play upstairs at our local in 2019 which was a good night of heavy basslines and dancing.

Showed the flyer to my mate and he thought Lenny Henry was playing.
I love his remix album of Massive Attack's Protection.

Tried a couple of the links from this thread (thanks
) and YT popped this fabulous thing up next Kunta Kinte Dub. Drop in a foghorn? Schmokin'.
Done a load of digging and I can't find all 3 versions otherwise they'd be downloaded already!
Apparently in the recent Small Axe TV prog.

Killing Joke were my favourite punk band back in the day. I went to see them loads of times, I think 'Turn to Red' was way ahead of it's time in a sort of dance/dub way. It's one of my most treasured originals in my whole collection.
