I have a small construction company, 3 employees plus myself. Unfortunately one of my employees was involved in an RTC before Christmas resulting in him having a below knee amputation. He may never be able to return to his job as it's extremely physical, so I have had to find a replacement. He starts next Monday, we have a fair work schedule for now, but nothing for March & April, largely due to Covid causing problems in our supply chain & other stuff.
I can furlough the other 2 as they've been with me for years, but according to the government information the new employee won't be eligible as he wasn't on payroll in October.
Does anyone know if there's any way around this as this as the new guy has responsibilities to meet & I've not claimed anything so far, last year when it all kicked off I just paid everyone for a couple of weeks when a site got shut down as the minimum furlough was 3 weeks then & we needed to be back working after two.
Thanks

Nice that you arent just trying to offload him at the first opportunity.

I cant advise as to what is available with regards to furlough etc ... But assuming there is nothing you can do with regards to that and you are keen to retain him is there any scope for you to give him some paperwork stuff to do from home?

As you're in construction could it potentially involve sourcing new suppliers, subbies, drawing offices, structural engineers etc??? Maybe creating SOP'S for any areas you are lacking? Risk assessments and so on??

Thanks, my partner does the office work, I'm a subcontractor so the other stuff is done by the company we work for, I may take the opportunity to get him trained up for the plant and equipment we use, if the training company is working & has courses available.....

Who was his previous employer?

Can you contact them about putting him back on their furlough scheme?

What a horrible position to be in, and fair play for not running.

He was previously working for an agency, he's still owed money by them from a couple of months ago so I can't see that happening
He's the son of a friend, I gave him a trial in November & he's keen to work so I want to keep him. We work long hours & most of it is away from home all week so getting good workers that are happy to do that isn't easy.

Explain situation and say it would be awesome if he could take some vacation when you're quiet so you share the pain?

May help a fortnight's worth in that two months?

Whats your relationship like with some of the main contractors you work with?

Is there any milage in contacting them explaining the situation to them and seeing if they have any work that he is capable of doing for them that they could award to you to keep him ticking over? Even if its just menial stuff im sure he would appreciate the work.

I don't think there would be many companies that do this as they become liable for NI and Pension contributions. So essentially taking on cost and admin work for something you have no benefit from.

Simple answer is no, you can't claim for this employee. That being said the qualifying date for claims has changed and may well do again.

I'm hoping that date may change by the time we reach this situation.

Same boat here, started my job mid November and we've gone quiet (motor trade) and it's a real possibility I'll be out of a job soon.

As above I'm not entitled to anything, and no mention of the furlough cut of date being brought forward from end of Oct. Doubt it will be now.
