£13k SUV Hyundai Tucson or?!

Just a quick post for some ideas
Friends of ours have £13k budget for an SUV
5-6k mileage per annum so Petrol

The wife likes the Tucson Premium or Sports Edition, I’ve seen one for their budget with higher than average mileage and a 2018 plate so 3 years left on he warranty.
Are they any good? Cheap motoring and reliable?

Any alternative suggestions?

I'd say that'll be hard to beat I'd normally say a Kuga but you'll only get a 2016 Titanium X for that budget:

We have a Hyundai Kona now which works pretty well. Drives OK I suppose.

Economy wise it's around 40 MPG on average .

A bit smaller than a Tuscon though,.

My wife had a 2016 Tucson Premium SE. It had lots of toys but felt very plasticy. Drive wise it was ok, but she changed it for a Skoda Kodiaq last year and the difference is night and day. The Skoda feels much more premium, and is a pleasure to drive. Your friends would need to up their budget a little, but the skoda is a much better car. Would a Skoda Karoq fit the bill? It's probably about the same size as a Tucson, whereas the Kodiaq is a bit bigger.

Aren't those GDi petrol Tucsons a bit sluggish? Not a lot of torque for a big car. For the same money you could get the Qashqai or X Trail (depending on how big you want the SUV) with the 1.6 turbo petrol engine.

I drove a Tucson hire car for a week or two last year, it was fine, but cannot say much more about it.
It was pretty quick(had a surprising 180bhp IIRC), comfort was ok, refinement was ok, drive was ok.
Best thing was probably the amount of toys it had, what would put me off the most (just my preference) it had an absolutely crap sound system.

Only other rival I’ve driven in a Renault Kadjar, and that was a much, much better car (same car as the Qashqai if I’m not mistaken), I wanted to hate it when given the keys but was quite taken with it.
It was much more comfortable, much more refined, nicer to drive and the sound system was good.

The Tucson was ok, the Kadjar was good. Other point there, sitting in the Tucson was like sitting in a 2010 car, the Kadjar was like a 2020 car.

not really relevant but the 2021 Tucson's are very nice. Sat in one last week.

I have the SE Nav but diesel. Great car IMO and one of the better looking SUVs. It feels very solid, no roll around corners and we've had no issues whatsoever with it. It's been fantastic really, the diesel is quite torquey so it gives the right power when needed. Has a lot more appeal if you have kids and car seats as there is just loads of room in it. If it's just you +1 maybe get something more exciting.

Another contender seems to be the Peugeot 3008 as well. Looks a nice car as well.

I don’t think they need super fast but not sluggish. Diesel isn’t needed unfortunately otherwise I would have suggested it for the torque aspect.

If bang for buck and value is important then you could also look at the Kia Sportage.

The Sportage look great (IMO) but I've heard mixed comments on the seat comfort or lack thereof?

I had a 2015 CX-5 - diesel, but Sport Nav spec. Very nice car, wish I'd kept it longer than I did. I'd have one of those over a Tucson.

My wife has a diesel Tucson. Not sure of the exact model/spec but it's got loads of toys plus heated leather front and rear and a big panoramic sunroof which actually opens, unlike some others. We're just coming up to 3 years and 70k miles with it and it's had very few issues. Needed a new battery at one point and the damper in the crank pulley failed but that's been it. You should be aware that my wife has a track record of absolutely destroying cars yet this one has stood up to the abuse better than the BMW, Mercedes, Skoda, Seat, Suzuki and Mazda that came before it.

When we come to replace it, it will be another Tucson a Sportage or a CRV. There are lots of other options but most of them have French engines with known issues.
