Driving to Paris or Amsterdam

im toying with the idea of driving over to Paris or Amsterdam. I want to set out on Friday and be back in London by Sunday Lunch. I m sure loads of people have done this trip and was wondering..
How long does it take to drive to Paris
Amsterdam say from calais?
Should I book hotels before i go or can i find hotels quite easy once im there?
Is it easy driving over there?
Or if anyone has any other suggestions?

Drove to Amsterdam once, via Ostende. Can't remember how long it took, maybe about 4 hours steady?
Decent network of roads up to Amsterdam but when you get to the city itself.........
NIGHTMARE
Coming back, double nightmare. Stuck in a motorway traffic jam for an hour and a half. Would have missed the return boat but thankfully that got delayed due to bad weather!
Would I do it again? Probably yes because a) I love driving and b) I love Amsterdam.
The traffic jam may have been 'One of those things' and not a regular occuarance. Who knows?
We booked a hotel before we went... BUT, to be quite frank it was shite and we got a refund. Went looking on foot for another place to stay the next day and found somewhere easily enough.
You need to then get the car locked in an underground, proper car park for the duration as I really believe that the chances of killing somebody on a bike are very high indeed, as are the people riding them.

Amsterdam is 230 odd miles from Calais and easily doable in 3 and a bit hours without overly risking intervention from le plod. Can take much longer though if the Antwerp ring is busy (which it often is between 5 and 8pm).
Paris is about 180 miles from Calais and about 2 and a half hours. Easier drive as its basically one road.
Neither city is much fun to drive in but I find Paris the easier of the 2 - the bikes plus trams seem to add that extra element!
Oh, and having been to each at least 20 times my view is that you'll have more fun in Amsterdam whatever you're after.
