For the third time I am now shielding and as on the two previous occasions I am working from home (or I thought I was)

Just had an automated email from our HR system saying I am on "special paid leave",

To say my relationship with my boss it stretched at the moment would be fair,

Edit: just to add I am half way through a phased return to work

I presume you have a condition or your age means you need shielding. Are you carrying out your duties or are you being placed on Furlough?

Or are you on sick leave?

You are entitled to be Furloughed, I would ask your company to look into that.

Could you explain this? If the company still requires workers from home or otherwise how is furlough an entitlement?

Genuine question!

Sorry, my first post was really not too clear!

What I should have asked is what are the (are there any) implications of being of special paid leave as opposed to just working from home as I have done for a lot of the year. Being on special paid leave implies I am on leave and not working which I am.

Just have a bit of an uneasy feeling about it.

I am trying to work out exactly what the "work from home" is contrasted with "special leave" and I wasn't sure if his employer is simply stating "WFH" despite it not being a true WFH situation. If that is the case then Furlough should be possible.

Not so sure... although I dont actually teach very much I am a teacher "in name". I actually run the catering and can manage kitchens remotely although my "boss" is very old school public sector, ie. if you cant be seen you cant be working.

Are you in an Academy or an LA school? If the latter then you need to speak to the LA HR Department. if the former then do you have in-house HR or is it contracted out? If it's contracted-out then you should be able to get a clear unbiased answer. If it's In-house HR then basically down to if the Principal likes you or not........

Based on what you've said you should be allowed to WFH. However if your Manager doesn't think you can WFH then special leave sounds about right (because there won't be a category for "shielding" on the HR absence management system).
