Hi, just got myself a new laptop and I don't want to sign up for Office 365. I'm happy to have an older version. Even back to 2007 is fine.

Where would I buy it? I don't have a cd drive on the laptop. Google just seems to throw up a lot of random sites saying download here. All seem very dodgy.

Does any know a reputable site I could buy and download it?

Thanks
Neil

Do you absolutely need it?

Libre Office is free and handles all microsoft based documents. - https://www.libreoffice.org/

Since it's free download and try it.

I think this site was recommended elsewhere on pistonheads

https://www.cjs-cdkeys.com/products/Microsoft-Offi...

Apparently legit as it’s legal to resell a license.

Either LibreOffice (as already suggested) or OpenOffice https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

Both are excellent, bug-free and compatible with MS Office. My OpenOffice looks like and feels like Office 2007 and is brilliant for generating and formatting 'ordinary' work.

Not for all but if where you work use enterprise MS you might be eligible for MS Home Use program.
Bit of a discount.

When I used to work for a local authority I got a download for about £8.00. But I'm talking SOME years ago.

The MS helpline has been excellent in the past. I wanted to transfer my above license to a new laptop, but couldn't find the key, called them and they just give me a new one over the phone.

Home use program no longer allows ‘one off’ purchase of MS office, it now only permits discounted Office 365 subscription (or at least mine does).

Have you tried using the free versions of Office Online?
It might be enough for what you need/want to do.

If not then the best alternative for Office file compatibility I've come across in recent years is Only Office. They have trial and paid versions, but there is also a free version available for personal use if you dig around on their website.
It's currently much better than Open Office and Libre Office when it comes to file compatibility with MS Office, if that's a priority. Personally, for word processing, I'd rate it above the free version of Word available in Office Online.

Seems to good to be true surely?

One of the "reviews" on that page says:

"Office 365 A1 for faculty: The trick is clever. For the moment everything is functional."

So it sounds like they're reselling education licences that are intended for school staff (aka faculty, in America)

MS offer these A1 licences for free to schools.

The reference to not being able to use your own email adds further suspicion. I imagine they've got a dodgy school O365 tenancy and are just creating free accounts in it.

Edit: I forgot that A1 licences don't give access to the installable desktop applications. Still sounds dodgy to me though.

I get Professional plus for under £10
You can easily check if you qualify for their latest offering https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/home-use-program
Now only a discount on 365 as someone else pointed out. But still a discount !

What’s the difference between 365 and what I regard as windows office that we all used to buy and install? Ie excel, word, etc?

Nothing it's just the latest version (unless you are a business)

Microsoft 365 (was Office 365) is an annual subscription product; stop paying & it stops working. MS are trying to kill off the stand-alone, one time purchase version of Office but you can still buy it.

I use MS 365 but then I use the Outlook Exchange email service & the Onedrive storage so I dropped my Dropbox subscription & I can install all of the Office programs on 5 devices which is useful.

Of so sorry for numpty question but the above link cost of £7.65 or whatever it is, that (or from similar seller) would need repurchasing each year?

In theory no as it claims to be a lifetime licence - as has been said it's probably an acedemic one intended for schools & universities & the like. It does seem to come with a convoluted means of downloading & installing so maybe it will work but who knows. If it doesn't at least you've only lost £7.95.
