Last November Sky stopped Sky Go access for Xbox 360’s. Considering I still have a 360, you can tell I’m not much of a gamer!

I’m now considering purchasing a console, the kids are 4/6 so might find some use for it, and I get access to Sky Sports again.

I’ve found 1 year old PS4 500gb with three games for sale locally for £180 which seems about the going rate currently, but will this become worthless within the year or is there life left in them?

Any game ideas for little ones with no previous console experience would also be helpful - I got as far as Sonic/Columns on Sega classics on the 360 but they showed little interest laugh

We bought a PS4 last year and get a lot of fun out of it. My lad is 6 and we have Gran Turismo, Cars, Farming Simulator, Minecraft, Moto-X, FIFA and a rally game. I'd say you can't go wrong buying a second hand console, plenty of life in them yet

I always think new console generations are a good time to pick up an older one. Big library of great games you can pick up for peanuts, and the PS4 has a load of exclusives you can't play elsewhere. The PS5 of largely backward compatible with PS4 games too. All you're missing out on by being behind is online play, the latest games/consoles attract the most players but a lot of older games can be surprisingly popular still.

But - for young kids worth considering a Wii U. Will play all the old Wii stuff and use old Wii controllers which you can pick up really cheap. A bunch of current Switch games (like Zelda: BOTW, Mario Kart 8, etc) are just straight Wii U ports so may as well play those rather than forking out for a Switch.

It's absolutely worth it! A huge library of games that are cheap as chips and they still look great for the most part.

Funny someone should mention a Wii U - we plugged my GameCube in on New Year's Day to play Mario Kart with my 4 year old and it looked dreadful on the new TV so we picked up a Wii U on eBay (only round the corner from us so we got it the same day). Was £90 with some games. It looks great on the new TV (Nintendo's first hd console) and the games are great fun - Mario Kart 8 is just brilliant. I would really recommend it. Though being Nintendo, the games terms to be pricier than older PS4/Xbox games.

Cool, I didn’t know if I was just wasting money on old tech, but if even if just gives me the Sky Go access I’m saving money. For that reason wii/switch isn’t currently a consideration, but if the kids do start showing interest in the games side it’s something I’d consider too.

I’ll pick up Cars 3 as it’s been about the only film series they’re interested in and have a look at other options - maybe online demos? It comes with COD modern warfare, Tekken 7 and Killzone so might keep me entertained too laugh

I believe that Cars: Driven to Win is a quite well thought of Mario Kart clone so would be a good buy!

In terms of games for yourself then you are truly spoiled for choice! Just off the top of my head, three of my games of the generation: The Witcher 3, MGSV and Fallout 4 will set you back, for the Game of the Year editions, probably no more than £30 and give an easy 300 hours (potentially much more).

It's actually a great time to buy a console.

I'd look to get a PS4 Pro if you can. Keep your eye open and you should get one around £200. The more powerful console which may mean it feels like you would keep it longer.

Tonnes of PS4 Pro owners are selling as they get hold of the PS5 and Game isn't giving much of a trade in (£160?) so £200 is £40 more in their pocket and a heck of a deal for u.
